Seasonal gains in cattle and calves contrasted with smaller hog runs. National market shipments show cattle down by over 15,000, calves up slightly, hog shipments heavy yet 9,000 below last week. Sheep deliveries fall 34,000 from the previous week.
Choice fed steers and yearlings sold at 24 to 26.75 dollars with some higher. Stocker and slaughter calves varied as good and fair grades moved higher while plain cuts lagged. Bulls and cows ranged widely with fatties stronger, canners weaker, and old stockers in the 18 to 24 dollar area. Lamb prices declined slightly with shorn old crop weaker, common to good spring lambs 23 to 27 dollars.
