Since 1927 the government kept 30 animals on a reservation near Cache Oklahoma, with most remaining in private hands or on refuges in Oklahoma and Nebraska. Old Red, a longhorn, died recently, while experts note the breed’s revival driven by the Biological Survey and forest service efforts.
