The Times and Herald-Post unveil a Hoe Colormatic rig installed by NPC, with 37 miles of wiring and 104 motors powering three story high presses capable of 72,000 newspapers an hour. A misprint left 800 papers short the first run, prompting quick recovery from the field.
The Alpine Internationals defeated the Marfa Indians 15-6 as Mike Mirelez pitched in relief, erasing an early 5-0 deficit. Tony Campian led with five hits, while Henry Valenzuela, Jesus Valenzuela, and Felix Llanez added solid two hit games. Elias Sanchez and Tom Zubiate homered for Marfa. The Internationals head out of town this weekend.
Rotary and the Community Center awarded camperships to Ermelinda Hinojos Patricia McAlister Frances Bell Barbara Brown Norma Terrazas Ida Olazaba Jeanne Smith Mary Esther Matthews Swanne Williams. Mitre Peak Girl Scout Camp in the Permian Basin hosts 780 per season with 157 on a waiting list. $20 weekly fees cover basic costs.
Alpine Public Schools will open construction bids June 5 per Supt. Jack Frost. Voters approved a 300000 dollar school improvement bond. Plans will be ready in Frost’s office later this month. The board named members on the board of equalization and discussed science equipment purchases. State aid will cover half the high school science costs and lab renovations through the NDEA program. Public school music and cooperative mech drawing programs with colleges were approved for 1962-63. Enrollment totals: Centennial 472, Central 376, High School 255 for a total of 1102. L. C. Bradford’s resignation as Central custodian was accepted.
Brewster County Republicans nominated six write in candidates for county offices in the General Election led by Paul Vogt for county judge and Jane Coats for county district clerk Minnie Mae Cartledge as treasurer E Milton Smith for Precinct 1 commissioner Earl Fallis for Precinct 1 constable and J Neeland Allebrand for Precinct 3 constable Doyle Vincent elected county GOP chairman and precinct chiefs named. Results across races list candidate tallies for governor attorney general state treasurer land commissioner agriculture commissioner congressmen and education board amid a printing services note from The Avalanche.
Alpine Cemetery Association’s annual barbecue on April 28 raised 922 with expenses 56, net 876. Funds go to Elm Grove Cemetery upkeep. Secretary-treasurer Mrs. George Dallman thanks donors and volunteers and promises a bigger event next year.
Mr and Mrs Horace Burrise of Midland together with sister and brother in law of Mrs C C Holman and Mr and Mrs Gene Shelburne of Midland visited over the weekend with Mrs Holman.
Brewster County voters face a Democratic runoff Saturday with J C Cooley facing Thad Corkins for Precinct 1 and incumbent Robert Valadez opposed by Vic Molinar for Precinct 2. Primary tallies show Cooley, Valadez leading. Rutherford carried large margins in county races and gubernatorial candidates trailed Will Wilson. Propositions on goth horse racing approved 591 454 and 580 404 with poll tax abolition amendment 564 480. Complete results on Page 6.
Fire at Brewster County Motors Saturday evening caused just under 6000 in damage. Frank Votaw reported damage to tools equipment building and two cars one used and one new. The motor company remains open for business.
Six Sul Ross State College track athletes plan to compete at the Lone Star Conference meet in Beaumont. The squad includes Mike Nelon Felix Valles Weymond Saul Jimmy Phillips Jack Geron and A C Lex. Freshmen and sophomores dominate the group with Geron the sole junior.
Mrs Sara Pugh wins Democratic nomination for Brewster County district clerk in a write-in campaign. Only ballot name was J W Frazer who died before the election, with Frazer’s widow backing Pugh. Final counts show Pugh 786, Frazer 415, Mrs W R Green 156. The Avalanche notes its office supply stock in the Big Bend Country.
Congressman J T Rutherford thanked voters in the Big Bend region Brewster Jeff Davis Presidio and Terrell counties for renomination by a wide margin in the Democratic primary. He carried all 19 counties finishing about sixteen thousand five hundred votes ahead of the runner up and pledged active service in Congress. He campaigned a week due to duties in Washington and returned after election day to attend the next session.
Mr and Mrs LD Harris returned Monday from Alice Texas where they visited in the home of their son and daughter in law John Dow Harris They greeted their new grandson James Doyle born April 12 in Alice The younger Harris also are the parents of another son John Dow Jr
The Rodeo Club at Sul Ross State College schedules a 4 PM parade moving from Sul Ross area on Holland Avenue to the fire station. Nine colleges from Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico compete Thursday to Saturday with nightly rodeo shows at 8 PM and stock provided by Walt Alsbaugh of Alamosa Colorado.
Alpine announces two major summer golf events with the third annual partnership tournament on June 16 and 17 and an invitational on August 18 and 19. Local events include the ABCD Tournament on July 1 and the City Golf Tournament on September 6 and 7. The all grass course is highlighted as Alpine’s top attraction outside weather conditions.
Lightning and dry conditions sparked grass fires on several ranches. The Sohl Kimball and OG ranches reported blazes, with volunteers still fighting the Kimball fire miles north of Alpine as reports came in.
