A muddled wartime plea urges residents to clean yards cellars and alleys and paint houses and fences. The message frames cleanliness as civic duty to prevent waste hatred and to make the city a bigger cleaner town.
More than seven thousand U S cities held Clean Up and Paint Up drives last year. This year about forty thousand additional counties join the movement as communities learn that removing rubbish reduces fire risk and repairs costs. Citizens of all ages are urged to participate from May 6 to 9, mobilizing mowers brushes and whitewash to attack dirt and disease.
