Former miner named head of United States Chamber of Commerce
Richard J. Bowditch, longtime coal and steamship executive from Boston, has been elected president of the United States Chamber of Commerce by its board. A descendant of Salem settlers and MIT alumnus, he rose from mine trapper to business leader, championing U. S Canada relations and natural resources. He credits hard work and perseverance, recalling his early years hauling coal and his sea voyage to Asia. Bowditch also advised on transportation during his five years as a Chamber director.
