Thelma Gonzales Valenzuela of Alpine has been granted a vocational nurse license by the Board of Licensed Vocational Nurses.
The Big Bend Lucky Mother program will award one mother $100 in gift certificates and two others $50 each at Alpine businesses. Forty merchants participate with ballots in local firms. nominations are open to mothers in Brewster Presidio Terrell or Jeff Davis counties. Announcements proceed Friday May 12.
Alpine Lions Club sponsors a summer Little League for boys ages 9 to 12 in Central and Centennial Schools. Registration is available from Billy Hicks James Jackson and Ebbert Echols. Six teams will compete with sponsors American Legion Forchheimer Fort Davis Morrison Adams Francois and First National Bank. Coaches are Sul Ross State College students with Ray Van Cleef assisting.
Jerry Anthony 23 of Alpine born June 25, 1937, in Alpine died at Portsmouth Naval Hospital after serving in the Navy since Tulane graduation in June 1959. He was the oldest son of Mr and Mrs J C Anthony of Brookhaven Mississippi and nephew of Mr and Mrs John Gillett of Alpine. He expected to complete naval service in November of this year.
An Odessa man failed to pay $4 for gasoline at a San derson service station. The sheriff’s office notified Sheriff Jim Skinner who arrested him in Alpine and the Terrell County sheriff later took custody. He faces a fine between $25 and $200 for nonpayment.
School officials say band master Dick Bryan plans to start his summer band program on August 1. The initiative aims to prepare students for upcoming performances and competitions.
Alpine High sends its top debaters Tony Warnock Carol Vogt Paula Oates and Carole Holland with mentor Myrtle Whiteside to the State University Interscholastic League finals in Austin. Warnock and Vogt are graduating seniors while Holland a junior and Oates a sophomore have remaining eligibility. journey to Austin planned in two cars with Bart Pate and the Warnocks accompanying.
The Department of Fine Arts at Sul Ross State College invites the public to the annual all school exhibition today May 4 from 10 a m to noon and 2 to 6 p m. The display features student works from the 1960 61 semesters in the art gallery and studios.
The Big Bend Players announce The Pleasure of His Company a Samuel Taylor comedy to be staged May 15 and 16 at the Alpine Community Center Two May performances will feature Elbert Echols Bob Halpern Mrs Charles String Sam Thomas Mrs David Slaughter Dudley Dobie and Bob Corkins The production team includes Charles Boreing Fritz Weyerts and an in house scenery committee.
Work has started on a new parsonage for the First Methodist Church at East Avenue D and 2nd Street. Rev. Robert K. Baird said $27,000 has been raised for land, house, and furnishings. The Storey-Whiteside Lumber Co. holds the brick veneer contract at $23,400. The 2000 square foot home includes three bedrooms, two baths, a living room dining room, family room, kitchen, utility room, and double garage, with completion anticipated in five months.
Alpine High School will hold baccalaureate services in the Alpine High School Auditorium at 8 p.m. Sunday May 14. Principal speaker Rev W A Anthony of St James Episcopal Church, invocation by Rev Robert F Bristol of First Christian Church, benediction by Rev R E Streetman of First Baptist Church. Principal James Crawford will preside. 58 seniors in the 1961 class and up to five may be summer graduates.
In observance of National Hospital Week Brewster County Memorial Hospital will open its doors 3 to 5 p m Sunday May 7 Women of the Hospital Auxiliary will assist staff visitors will tour hospital facilities Mayor W E Lockhart proclaimed May 7 through 13 as Hospital Week in Alpine urging citizens to visit the hospital to learn of the dedicated staff and their high standard health care and community partnership for public health
Over 100 men from the Trans Pecos area are expected at Sul Ross State College for the second annual meet on Wednesday May 10. Principal speaker will be Dan R. Ponder with welcome by Dr. Bryan Wildenthal and Supt. C. J. Turner. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Little Theater and sessions open at 3:30 p.m. Workshop topics include school finance education legislation school programs and school community relations with a panel including Marfa and Alpine leaders and representatives from the Texas Association of School Boards.
Montgomery Ward & Co. will open a catalog store at 115 E. Holland in Alpine on May 18. A. G. Carmack announces the Alpine location expands Ward catalog stores to 635. The store showcases catalog merchandise including appliances apparel and seasonal items with swatch books carpeting paint and floor tile samples. Free Summer Sale catalogs will be given to visitors on opening day.
The third annual Girl Scout Fair runs 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday May 7 at Kokernot Lodge. A city wide court of awards will open the event with 10 active troops and 143 registered girls. Troop exhibits cover arts crafts and outdoor camping. refreshments will be served and the public is invited.
Pure Oil Co will drill an 11000 foot wildcat on the Joe T. Lane Ranch about 20 air miles southwest of Alpine. The test location sits 660 feet from the south and west lines of 5038 GH&SR in Presidio County, within a mile of the Brewster County line. It will be the No. 1 J. T. Lane.
