Camels in Texas and a May Alpine rodeo plan
The War Department imported about 80 camels from Egypt in 1856 for use in Texas and the Southwest. They proved adaptable to the southern climate and suitable for army work, but Civil War opposition ended the program. Camels later appeared with prospectors during the California gold rush. Also, plans urged for the Sul Ross Booster Club rodeo in Alpine May 8-9-10.
