Voters in Alpine will pick two councilmen from five candidates and likely name Bill Winter as mayor in the Tuesday election. Contenders for council include Dr. W. E. Lockhart, Robert K. Corkins, J. M. Floyd Sr, W. Hernandez, and W. John Newell. Voting is 8 am to 7 pm at the Chamber of Commerce with D. M. Bennett as judge. Absentee voting ends March 31.

In one of his last acts as Alpine mayor Dr. W E Lockhart expresses gratitude to Alpine Garden Club for sponsoring the Clean Up Paint Up Campaign. He praises the effort, hopes for annual spring events, and calls for improved garbage disposal. The Annual Cemetery Association barbecue is set for Saturday April 28 at the American Legion Hall with Mrs Nellie Mae McElroy as general chairman.

Oscar Graef 62 Balmochea ranchman died Monday morning in a Pecos hospital after a heart attack at the Pecos railroad depot while waiting to board a train to Dallas. Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Methodist Church in Alpine with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery. Born March 22, 1900, in Donnelly County, he ranching for about 55 years between Balmorhea and Fort Davis. He married Ona May Armstrong in Fort Stockton on April 18, 1927. Survivors include his wife, three sisters Mrs E J Harmon, Mrs George Armstrong, Mrs R N Stephenson, and two brothers Will Graef and Fritz Graef.

Alpine bond election set for March 31 for 300000 inprovements
Alpine Independent School District voters will cast ballots Saturday March 31 from 8 am to 7 pm at the Chamber of Commerce for a 300000 bond. Absentee voting ended Tuesday at the county clerk. The plan funds lighting upgrades, a new science room, renovations at Centennial and Central Schools, and rewiring of the high school with a 20 year repayment and a 25 percent property valuation increase.
