Senate Passes Land Tax Plan in West Texas Counties
Senate approves a plan to amend the Texas constitution to tax university lands in seventeen West Texas counties for county purposes. If voters approve in 1930, about 2 000 820 acres could be taxed, including Pecos County with 150 000 acres valued at about 24 million dollars. Jeff Davis Presidio and Brewster counties have no university land. Proponents hail a four year fight ending with state tax benefits to counties and citizens. Joe H Boggs previously led the drive for university tax responsibility. The Metcalfe proposal would place the tax on state lands if Gov Moody concurs and voters approve.
