Drilling Activity Foreseen in Brewster County Wells

Considerable drilling and development activity is seen by local oil men in Brewster County. Locations for two wells on the McIntyre and Brown ranches have been reported, though exact well locations are not definite. More than two wells are anticipated, with work to begin on these within the near future. Green Valley Well seen as latest drill by Green Valley Oil Corporation shot with 300 quarts of nitro glycerine to break into Wilton No 1 but the attempt failed. The Wilton No 1 is believed a trevise well and efforts will continue in Gros Valley with plans for further testing and future drilling. Mr Doddridge and other geologists maintain faith in abundant resources beneath Brewster County, despite the current setback.

Waples Platter Sells Alpine Branch to Radford Company

Radford Grocery company acquired the Alpine branch of Waples Platter Grocery, established in 1916. The transfer, supervised by Lovelace, occurred Monday as Alpine closes its far location to streamline contact with the main offices. Alpine’s Big Bend hub remains active for wholesale needs in the region.

Daugherty Buys Prize Winning Bull at El Paso

City Secretary W A Daugherty and companion returned yesterday from the cattle convention at El Paso where they bought a prize winning Hereford bull from John M Gist. The bull, shown as a summer yearling, won second prize at the El Paso exhibit and will be placed on the Pangherty ranch near Alpine.

Poetry Award Won by Alpine Student Richard Gillespie

Richard Gillespie of Alpine earned second place in the Poetry Society of Texas monthly contest conducted in Dallas. Elizabeth Rempert Rogers of Dallas won first for Memories, with Hazel Harper Harris of San Antonio third. The society meets monthly to read and vote on original verses from Texans.

Declamation Contest at High School Next Week

The High School auditorium hosts a declamation contest next Friday evening, March 25, to select a representative for the county meet. The county winner will then represent Trew Her county at the district contest in Alpine on April 14, 18, and 18 under Sir Ross Teachers College. Public invited to attend. it is free.

City Tax Ren ditions Due by April 1 Alpine Texas

City Tax Assessor A Daugherty reminds City Property Owners to file tax renditions to the City of Alpine by April 1. The note cites ongoing recognition for local poet Gillespie with Poetry Magazine of Chicago publishing one of his poems. The Poetry Society of Texas has previously honored him.

Alpine Wins Attendance Prize At Carlsbad Conference

Rotary clubs of the Forty second district and Rotary International gathered at Alpine and Carlsbad with Eddie Flynn and Governor Clint Anderson in attendance. The Albuquerque club won the mileage trophy while Alpine received the engraved silver cup. A visit to Carlsbad Cavern featured five hours of exploration viewed by many delegates.

A group of Brady leaders including J. K. Dell and E. J. Ogden visited Alpine Wednesday night after attending the cate Hemen's convention in El Paso. Charlie Jay and L. F. Wood joined the party as they spoke with Dr. Tuten Sparks, Baptist pastor, during their brief stop.

Plans to Expand the Holland Hotel by 20 to 40 Rooms

Owner Clay Holland announced a major enlargement for the Holland Hotel, doubling its size and adding 20 to 40 rooms with the possibility of 60 more later. The expansion will extend on the west side after buying Alpine Transfer property, aiming to begin soon and finish before the peak summer tourist period. Local hotels report overflows and guests being sent to private homes due to limited accommodations.
