Fort Davis saga recounts first Mescalero Apache clash
The account remembers General Smith’s 1854 Eagle Springs pursuit of cattle-raiding Apaches near Sierra Diablo. Captain Walker and Lt. Carr led 41 Mounted Riflemen in a swift village assault, with Carr wounded but fighting on, and a village lodges and stores burned as combat raged. The clash, while not decisive, marked early frontier conflict and signaled Apache resistance along the overland trail.
