Appropriation bill advances to buy park land in West Texas
A Texas House committee approved the measure to fund land purchases for a proposed Big Bend National Park. Former Speaker Coke Stevenson argued the plan would benefit the state, noting the school fund owns land and revenue from the seasetine tax could help. The bill calls for paying $1 per acre, up to $2 for individual owners, with federal designation and year round access cited as advantages. Funds are being raised to set up an Austin office to promote the park idea among lawmakers.
