Grandparents Vanishing in Brewster County Tribute by Berta Clark Lassiter
In a reflective tone the column honors grandfathers and grandmothers, noting a decline over three decades in Brewster County. The piece laments few remaining elders, contrasts with wildlife protection, and recalls bygone residents and their family roles through memories of pioneer families and county life.
Brewster County Behind on Fifth War Loan Bond Drive
Brewster County has only about half of its signed quota for the Fifth War Loan drive. County War Finance chair G. W. Baines said sales totaled around 125,000 dollars by noon yesterday, with only eight days left until the campaign ends July 8. He urged residents to buy bonds to the limit of their ability as invasion fears heighten patriotism. Civilian sales reached 2,025 dollars today, military purchases 6,450 dollars, totaling 9,939 dollars since June 1, with 50 new Class B enrollees investing 925.75 dollars per month. A Marfa civilian bought a 1,000 dollar bond this week, and an officer pledged 2,000 dollars in bonds to be purchased during the fifth drive.
