Starr Resigns to Join Sul Ross State College Coaching Staff
College Robert Starr, who coached the Alpine Bucks to their third straight district football win last year, resigns to join Sul Ross State College staff. Superintendent Clarence Winn expects a successor before Aug. 1. Starr was a member of Alpine High summer school faculty and came from Sulphur Springs in April 1966. He is a Baylor University graduate.

Hancock Funeral Today for Henry L Hancock 74
Henry Lee Hancock 74 longtime Alpine area rancher and civic figure died at 9 a.m. Tuesday June 27 at Sun Towers Hospital El Paso after months of illness. Funeral services Thursday June 29 at 2 p.m. at First Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Edwin Chappell and Rev. Evan Davies. Burial Elm Grove Cemetery under Geeslin Funeral Home. Survivors include widow Mary Gillett Hancock three sons William Lee Hancock John G Hancock Dr Richard H Hancock a daughter Mrs Robert Culpepper three sisters and 11 grandchildren.

Rain totals and Independence Day closings in Alpine area
The Avalanche gauge on College Hill recorded 3.59 inches of rain from Saturday night to Tuesday afternoon with four inches in parts of the city. June tied as the best local rainfall since 1958 at 4.52 inches for the month, with widespread moisture across the Big Bend and Davis Mountains. Most Alpine firms will close Tuesday July 4 for Independence Day with City Hall, Post Office, Courthouse, School Office and bank shut. some travel-related businesses will stay open.

New UT Observatory To Begin Work July 1
The University of Texas plans a new radio observatory near Marfa to receive space signals beginning July 1. Dr. James N. Douglas leads the project with a $198,099 NASA grant to study Jupiter radiation, aiming to locate the signals’ origin and rule out intelligent life. The facility sits on leased ranch land, forming the world’s largest radio site with future plans for a two mile by one quarter mile interferometer array.

Luther T. Peterson Jr. named superintendent of Big Bend National Park by George Bartaog Jr. of the National Park Service. A 23 year NPS veteran from Ferris Texas, he will take the post in early July succeeding Perry F. Brown who retired June 3 after 39 years. Peterson, a Texas A&M grad, has served as Carlsbad Cavern superintendent and held key NPS posts in California Nebraska and Wyoming. He and his wife plan to arrive July 8 for a reception with the Browns. Episcopal faith noted.

Construction Worker Burned at Alpine Site
James McDougall, a Cecil Ruby Construction Co. worker, was severely burned when a drilling tower contacted a 12,990 volt line on U S 99 east of Alpine. He was rushed to Brewster County Memorial Hospital in Alpine in good condition. Opposition to Alpine’s new municipal swimming pool plans is expected at a joint Parks Board and Planning Commission meeting at 7:39 p m tonight.
