Irrigation to Transform Southwest Texas Farmland

Texas irrigation advocates, led by W L Rockwell, cite a Texas Welfare Commission address noting that 12 million acre feet of Gulf runoff from major rivers could irrigate 3 million acres. Including smaller streams could lift total irrigable land to 5 to 6 million acres, boosting cotton and corn yields and placing Texas ahead in truck crops. Southwest Texas, with Medina River projects and other streams, is seen as ready for development to convert arid areas into fertile fields and orchards. The piece urges statewide effort to exploit irrigation as a primary growth driver.
