Plans for Alpine's tenth annual Old Settlers and Cowboys Roundup on July 3 and 4 are nearly complete. Gene Benson and Joe Parker announce calves for roping and bucking horse rentals, with McSpadden’s string to star, including Lady Alamo. Events include a 200 yard roping horse race and a quarter mile dash for two year olds, with liberal prizes and a 60 20 10 split among winners.

Pecos Hosts Second Annual Rodeo July 3 4

Botanists Collect Native Plants in Chisos Ranges
Two Missouri Botanical Garden researchers pursuing PhD studies in botany traveled from Alpine to the Chisos mountains to collect native plants and map vegetational patterns. They pressed 1,500 specimens from the Davis Mountains before proceeding to the Guadalupe mountains and a forthcoming Arizona trip.

Mrs Bowles Buried Here In Alpine Texas
Mrs Mary Bowles wife Bowles of Alpine died Saturday morning at the home of Mr and Mrs Nay Bowles after a brief illness. The funeral was held Sunday from the Bowles residence with Rev Baren Sparks officiating. Her infant daughter died a few hours after birth. Mary Etta Bennett Bowles born November 2 1904 in Snyder Texas and died July 20 1981 in Alpine. She taught near Snyder Hobbs and Corpus Christi and married Tom Bowles January 5 1929 in Rotan Texas. Survived by stepmother Mrs W M Bennett of Hollywood California.

Shelton Killed in Rail Crash Near Alpine
M L Shelton a 72 year old resident of Alpine and Sul Ross student was killed when the light vehicle he drove was struck by a speeding Southern Pacific Limited near Toronto at about 5 o'clock Sunday. He suffered fatal chest injuries with multiple broken ribs and skull injuries. The crash occurred as he was returning from Presidio Valley. report notes the death was instant with doctors citing crushed chest as immediate cause.

City to Drill Another Well Near New Site
The city announced plans to start drilling a clay water well at a new location next week using a 124 inch hole. If water flow is good a 600 gallon per minute pump will be installed. In the future a second reservoir may be built on College Hill and connected to the hill south tank to expand storage.

Breeder Feeder Field Meet Draws 200 Delegates in Marfa
The Breeder-Feeder field meet in Jeff Davis Brewster and Presidio counties closed in Marfa after over 200 delegates from feeders bankers packers and transporters toured Big Bend cattle operations. Alpine completes fourth city well to boost water supply
The Alpine city completed a new fourth well, pumping over 300 gallons per minute from 374 feet depth. The 239 foot well includes a 360 foot casing and 465 foot open hole, with a 6 inch discharge and a cost around $6000. Officials say it provides a reliable supply while larger wells top off the reservoir.

Band Rehearsal Attendance Drops to Twelve

Christians Convene Monday in Alpine District Meeting

Plan for New Library Building Interior Work
The college plans extensive interior work on a new library building including blackboards installed in all rooms a modern woodworking department in the basement new curtains and shades in all areas seating in the auditorium heating system upgrades and a concrete sidewalk network around the building with flower plots and shrubbery two rooms modernized for teacher study additional lighting and two rooms rededicated for primary and intermediate teachers. The total cost is not yet known but the board of regents in Galveston approved the plan recently.
