The July 24 Democratic primary slate saw little change after the final filing deadline. J. T. Carney withdrew for army duty, H. R. Gard filed for county surveyor, and draw for ballot spots will occur tomorrow. Listed candidates include K. M. Regan, Woodrow Wilson Bean, Lester C. Boone, Maurice T. Bobbit, P. R. Price, Alan R. Fraser, Travers Crumpton, H. R. Gard, Earl Clark, Virginia Young, H. B. Pruett, and Earl Young.
Two burglaries were reported in Alpine this week both occurring last Friday night. The Watson Anderson Grocery Co building was entered and a small amount of cash and goods were taken. Entrance was through a north window. Four hams and a pair of steaks were taken from the Texas cafe with some items later recovered. Two local Latin American youths were arrested and admitted theft.
About 300 boys from the area enrolled in the Royal Ambassadors camp at Paisano Baptist encampment last week, with the camp closing Friday. The girls camp opened Monday and is estimated to exceed 300 attendees. Main encampment speakers for July 26 to August 1 include Dr. R. G. Lee of Memphis and Dr. E. S. James of Vernon First Baptist.
Lt. George Ansloan formerly of Alpine has been returned to Germany with the occupation forces after a May last year sick leave. He studied at Carlisle Barracks Pa since returning to the States. His present station is Frankfurt, while his wife lives at a summer resort hotel about 100 miles away. She is sister to Mrs. Carl Shults of Alpine and Ansloan was stationed at the local air base during the war.

Fort Davis reports 200 in attendance at the Bloys Camp Meeting Assn annual gathering. The 59th encampment runs Aug 17 to Aug 25 with J W Merrill as president. Busines session at 1 30 pm followed services by Dr L D Anderson Dr S L Joekel and Dr W R White featured music by Nancy Jones and Henry Coffield.
Dr J W Dollahue a veterinarian will be in Alpine all day next Wednesday June 30 to inoculate dogs against rabies at the rear of city hall. The usual fee will be charged.
Coleman C. Gulley age 49 a former Sul Ross College business manager died last Sunday in Austin of a heart attack He had served four years as an assistant to the state auditor and was a former dean of men at TCU Fort Worth Burial took place in Dublin Monday He is survived by his widow and a son also named Coleman
The State Highway Commission awarded a contract Tuesday to rebuild 5.4 miles of U.S. Highway 90 east of Alpine from Sul Ross to the east side of the college. Schwope Brothers of San Antonio bid $195,103 among 10 firms. The new route removes many sharp turns and grades. work should start in about 60 days.
Hon Fred Wemple of Midland member of the State Highway Commission will be the principal speaker at the Alpine chamber of commerce semi annual meeting on July 7. Further details to be announced next week.
Trans-Texas Airways expands service from Marfa Alpine west to El Paso with an inaugural flight today carrying dignitaries including former Gov. J. W. Allred and Attorney General Price Daniel. Daily westbound flights depart 8:21 p.m. arriving 9:33 p.m. CST. eastbound from El Paso at 5:10 a.m. MST arriving Marfa Alpine 7:20 a.m. CST. connections available to Eagle Pass Brownsville San Antonio and Houston.
Dr. Ross Maxwell, park superintendent, reported Tuesday that three fires started by lightning in the Big Bend park have been contained.
H W Purday 90 longtime Tularosa resident and Indian War veteran died at William Beaumont Hospital El Paso after weeks of illness. Funeral with military and Masonic honors held in his honor. Purday served with the 1st Infantry, built cabinets, and helped shape New Mexico frontier life through farming, ranching, and water exploration.
In a hot local ball game at Alpine, the Marfa Indians beat the Alpine Cowboys 3 to 2 as Castorena earned the win and Thornton the loss. Indians’ F Lujan had three hits in four at bats including a double, while Cowboys’ Jordan and Herricks led with three and two hits respectively. The crowd of about 1200 included many Marfa supporters and local veterans honored by H L Kokernot Jr.
Mrs. L. D. Wardlaw of Alpine undergoes a major operation. Roberta Gonzales in Fort Stockton receives treatment. Mrs. A. H. Fowlkes of Fort Davis is listed for treatment. John Kilgore from Sal Ross is noted for treatment. Tommy Ann Howell of Alpine appears in the list.
Local rains and showers spread across the Big Bend and Davis mountains area with Kokernot and Henderson properties recording quarter to one inch totals. Alpine and Presidio County towns reported scattered precipitation and unusually high temperatures reaching 101 degrees last Friday.
J. H. Wilbourn, who has operated a photo studio here for 18 months, left last weekend to return to his former home in Dallas. He could not secure suitable quarters for his studio here. His studio previously occupied Mrs. M. S. Burke residence on N. Fifth Street during his stay.
The Granada theatre features a cartoon carnival tomorrow with Three Stooges Popeye Bugs Bunny Terrytoons cartoons in technicolor. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the feature.
Alpine FFA placed third among Texas chapters at the state FFA convention in Houston last week. The top four were Jasper Harlingen Alpine and Clifton in that order with Alpine receiving a bronze plaque and Gold Emblem certificate to be presented by W. EF Williams. Lone Star Farmer degrees were awarded to Billy Mills William Webb Jim Spann Joe Smith and Otis French for outstanding participation leadership and projects.
The House and Senate cleared an interior appropriation of 30000 to buy road right of way near Persimmon Gap east entrance to Big Bend National Park. Funds become available after July 1 once President Truman signs. Senator Tom Connally and Representative Ken Regan led the push.
The Alpine Internationals maintained second place in the Big Bend league by defeating the Fort Davis Cats 2-1 in a hot ball game here last Sunday morning. They travel to San Angelo Sunday to face the Greyhounds who played the Cowboys here earlier this season.
Fort Davis June 23 three boys aged 17 17 and 20 arraigned on burglary counts tied to stealing a stop watch from a Valentine schoolhouse and later a rifle revolvers field glasses from Roosevelt Cattle Co. They fled toward Mexico abandoning the Ford and a later car before being captured by state officers. Bail set at 1000 each.
