Governor’s Alpine Welcome for Bluebonnet Leader

A community wide celebration is planned in Alpine Saturday afternoon for Margaret Morrow governor of Bluebonnet Girls State. She will be greeted by fellow delegates Phyllis Avant and others on her return.

Alpine honors Margaret Morrow after her election as Governor of Bluebonnet Girls State marking a departure from prior Houston and Rio Grande Valley winners. A city proclamation declares June 22, 1963 as Margaret Morrow Day with a 5 p.m. parade, a 5:30 program on the courthouse lawn, and a 6 p.m. barbecue at the American Legion.

Alpine Girl Becomes Bluebonnet Girls State Governor

Margaret Morrow of Alpine was inaugurated as governor of Bluebonnet Girls State in Austin. The West Texas student, a senior at Alpine High School, led as Federalist nominee defeating a McAllen opponent in the runoff and Susan Riley of Houston in the general election. She will preside until next summer and serves as Alpine High School Student Council president.

Death Takes Mrs. Hoppin in Brewster County Memorial Hospital

Mrs. Sarah Lee Hoppin of Amarillo died Wednesday morning June 19 in Brewster County Memorial Hospital. Born August 23, 1911 in Marathon, she is survived by three sisters E D McIver of McAllen W H Clark of Houston and D W Collins of Marathon and one brother Jack Todd of Marathon. Also two nieces and two nephews. A Presbyterian and American Legion Auxiliary member, she will be buried in Amarillo by Geeslin Funeral Home.

Alpine Visitors Include Spence Relative and El Paso Couple

Mr and Mrs Charles W Grugan of California visited the Ray Spence home last week. Mrs Grugan is sister of Mrs Spence. Mr and Mrs Roscoe Morgan and two children Dorothy and Ray of El Paso were in Alpine on business and visiting relatives last weekend.

Alpine Jubilee to Award 60 Prizes and Host Festivities

Alpine merchants donate 60 prizes for boys and girls contests at the Fourth of July Jubilee. The Pilot Club and Rotary Club plan many awards for bingo and novelty events. Rescue Squad offers rides on the fire trick wagons as over 2000 visitors are expected amid snowcones, hotdogs, balloons, and flags. Concession space reservations close today and a program will be posted next week. Mary Helen Gibson of Houston visits prior to her July 20 wedding.

Sul Ross State College audit finds clean bill of health

State Auditor C. H. Cavness reported Sul Ross State College Alpine received a clean bill of health for the year ending August 31 1962. The audit shows 1190 fall 1103 spring student enrollment 757 first summer term 640 second summer term and total current expenditures of 1 393 351 including 798 45 for salaries and wages 519 861 for other operating expenses and 74 844 capital outlay. Maryjorie Fraser King left Wednesday for a three week trip to Santa Fe Phoenix and El Paso.

FHA Girls Trip To Fort Stockton For Swim And Picnic

FHA girls traveled to Fort Stockton last Saturday enjoyed swimming at Comanche Springs pool and a park picnic. Attendees included Elisa Espinos a Dora Castillo Estella Lar Candy Weston Margie Portillo Concepcion Reyes Susie Payne Lee Shortt Lorina Uranga Rosalinda Melgaza Patricia Flores Sylvia Cobos Dotty Hinckley Marie Chavez Delia Rodriguez and families. They face sunburns but report a wonderful time and plan yearbook prep and a 4th of July Jubilee booth with a fist pond. A committees meeting is set for Wednesday June 26 requiring all members to attend.
