Local poetess Faye Carr Adams of Wichita Falls recalls Fort Davis and Alpine in a ballad about Indian Emily, the chieftain’s daughter who saved Fort Davis during an Apache raid. The poem, titled Em'ly the Chieftain's Daughter, placed in the Texas Poetry Society contest and links Emily to the Fort Davis tale and a captain she loved.

Lt Grady Nelon co pilot of a B 24 Liberator bomber was shot down over Yugo Slavia on July 3 and held as a prisoner by the Germans until Allied forces overran the area He is greeted by wife Carolyn Bishop and baby in Alpine where he formerly lived He arrived in Italy last June 14 and worked for the State Highway Department before the war His mother Mrs Witt Stack lives in Van Horn This week he visited relatives and friends in Alpine with family sailing homeward after captivity ended.

Seriousness of drought shown by U S Weather Station report

Alpine Woman Killed in Alamogordo Auto Crash
Alpine resident Mrs Elwina Cravens was killed in a car accident 12 miles south of Alamogordo New Mexico last Tuesday afternoon. Her daughter Helen Hewitt of El Paso died the following day from injuries, and Mrs Walter Hewitt was initially injured. Cravens and her husband had been living in Alpine as pastors of the Valentine and Toyah Baptist churches. Mrs Cravens had gone to El Paso to meet a brother, Rev Walter E Hewitt, who had returned from overseas. Rev Hewitt, the driver of the car, was seriously injured.

Lightning Ignites Grass Fires Across Alpine Area
A spate of grass fires, likely sparked by a weekend lightning storm, spread through Alpine this week with several still burning yesterday. The largest blaze tracked the Gage ranch in Chalk Valley about 15 miles southeast of Alpine, burning about 50 sections and thought under control. Another Gage ranch fire in Wood Hollow near Marathon scorched six to seven sections before being halted, while a third near Marathon flowed into Hess ranch lands with six to seven sections burned.
