Alpine Internationals rebound from two losses by beating Pecos Indians 11-8 at International Field. Felix Llanes earned the win with help from brother Pilar as Cordova Salgado and Llanez led with three hits. Indians benefited from six errors for five unearned runs and travel to Marfa next. Local manager Ernest Fiero notes Vicky Hemander to start with Raymond Sallego. SP agent J M Floyd left for Houston for routine checkup.
A twister struck late Saturday afternoon in southeastern Brewster County tearing roofs from the Hallie Stillwell ranch house and bunkhouses nearby. The family escaped unharmed while a 250 gallon tank was hurled by the wind. Rain followed, with 15 feet of water in Bee Cave Draw and several inches more of rainfall in surrounding areas, causing furniture damage and disrupting ranch operations. Bear Creek rose four times in a week, signaling unusual flood activity.
Richard Harvey accepts first assistant coaching job at Sul Ross State College replacing Joe King who moves to McCamey High School as head coach and athletics director. Harvey, from Grapevine, Texas, has seven years as a high school coach with two district championships and Marine Corps service in 1953 1954. He is San Angelo native and North Texas State University alumnus with bachelor and master degrees. He is married with two sons and a former North Texas athlete.
State auditor analysis shows Davis Mountains State Park operates at 0.0231 cents per visitor, far below Mission San Francisco de los Tejas at 204.2 cents. Other parks report Kerrville 28.9, Balmorhea 0.0457, Big Spring 0.0435, and Monahans Sandhills 0.0361 cents per visitor with 1961 activity including 4000 overnight campers and 12,000 picnickers from 46 states and abroad.

The Big Bend National Park post office will relocate to the new Administration Building at Panther Junction on Friday June 15. Mrs Vesta French serves as park postmaster. Previously in the Chisos Mountains Basin, the service will switch to a Star Route with a Basin collection box remaining. Mail delivery occurs five days a week, Monday through Friday, with San Vicente receiving service on Wednesdays.
Funeral services held for Mrs. Walter S. Miller 88 in Fort Davis with Rev. Sublett and Rev. Van Auken officiating. She died June 9 in El Paso after ill health. born Lena Elizabeth Espy March 20 1874. Survivors include son J Kesey Miller daughter Tyrone T Kelly and others. The family long operated Limpia Hotel from 1922 to 1936. Dr H H Gilliam to reopen his Hill Building office soon. Local mail route run by E T McDonald from Alpine to Terlingua.
Alpine voters will decide on June 30 whether to issue 80000 in bonds for city sewer extensions. Qualified property owners within Alpine may vote at the Chamber of Commerce building. D M Bennett presides, with Bryan Kelley as assistant judge and Ezequiel Rivera and Rubye Burcham as clerks.
Brewster County Commissioners accepted the resignation of Dr. John S. Carleton as county health officer and said he will move to Houston later this month. A new health officer will be named later. The court also approved street repairs with Alpine, not to exceed 13000 dollars, and authorized full page Alpine Advertiser ad in Diamond Jubilee edition for 50 dollars. Twelve steel chairs from Smith Furniture Co. at 38.50 each were approved for the district courtroom.
Rev. R. E. Streetman and Mrs. Streetman are due back from Temple where he has been treated at Scott and White Clinic. He expects to fill the pulpit at the First Baptist Church Sunday.
Alpine County Club hosts a two day golf event drawing about 110 players from West Texas. Friday features 18 hole low ball play and Saturday 27 holes across five flights starting around 7 am with medalist prizes. McGregor bags go to flight winners. a Saturday buffet supper follows.
Brewster County marks its Diamond Jubilee on July 4 with Alpine Chamber plans. Bill Winter and Dick Rogers chair a committee inviting social and service clubs from Alpine Marathon and Big Bend National Park to set up booths with patriotic displays. Concessions allocated on first come basis. County officials note courthouse grounds as the venue with streets closed from 4 p.m. Activities include Old West costumes, music, and 8 p.m. street dancing. A souvenir tabloid edition will recount Brewster County history at the event.
Members of the Marfa Production Credit Association voted 127 to 4 to divide into two groups. The MPCA will keep headquarters in Marfa covering Brewster Presidio Jeff Davis and part of Pecos County. The new West Texas Production Credit Association will be based in Pecos. Walter Shaw Jr. of Pecos elected president of the new group. A 4 percent dividend will be declared at the end of the fiscal year June 30.
Mrs W M Staggs and daughters Ann and Carol of Longview visited her mother Mrs C Mudd and Mr Mudd here this week reporting a family gathering and travel news from the region.
The Brewster-Jeff Davis 4-H Livestock Judging Team placed eighth at the 4-H Roundup in College Station. Twenty three teams from 12 Extension districts participated, with about 3500 4-H members statewide attending a sponsor banquet. Llano County won with 1526 points. Brewster-Jeff Davis scored 1358, Pecos County 1255, while Pecos had beat Brewster-Jeff Davis in April district contests before a state reversal.
Cant Williams Jr. a state highway patrolman for the Alpine area for three years, is transferred to the Peace office Friday, June 15. Immediate successor unnamed. Other patrolmen in the area are Baylus Wagnon at Marfa and Carl Davis at Sanderson. Williams’ territory included Brewster County and part of Jeff Davis County. He graduated from Sul Ross State College in 1954 and led Boy Scout Troop No. 41 for several months.
