Orient Seeks 3.5 Million Loan for Alpine Presidio Rail
Directors of the Orient met in San Angelo and asked Santa Fe for a 3.5 million loan to complete the Alpine to Presidio railroad. The plan would create 350 to 400 jobs, yield a monthly payroll near forty thousand dollars, and benefit Alpine, Shafter, Presidio, and nearby communities. Construction on the new line from Paisano west of Maine toward the border nears completion, with survey work guiding a route largely along the original survey. A finance committee led by W. H. Terry reports strong investor interest, with several thousand dollars already paid in and more stock buyers expected. The rodeo preparations include a big tree barbecue funded by local ranchers and business contributions, to be held at a site to be announced at the Monty meeting.
