SP asks for tri weekly Sunset passenger service
Southern Pacific seeks ICC approval to run the Sunset trains three times weekly in both directions between Los Angeles and New Orleans via Marfa Alpine Marathon and Sanderson. If approved the railroad would restore diner lounge and sleeping car service on the full 2033 mile route as last operated on the New Orleans El Paso segment in 1966. SP argues reduced trips would still meet public need while lowering losses which totaled 2,455,000 in 1968 and 1,195,000 for four months in 1969.
