Finding of Old Records Recounts Early Big Bend Days
In Marfa a cache of 16 gunny sacks of old records at Humphris and Company reveals the rise of the Big Bend’s commercial center. The papers, found by noted historian Mrs. Jack Shipman, document English owned Humphris and Company and its shifts to Murphy and Walker Co, with links to Shafter and Presidio. Don Jos Humphris led the vast business, tracing roots to Don Juan who moved from horse trade to sheep farming after a stock shipwreck, later serving as Duval sheriff and shaping frontier commerce and law in the era.
