Alpine city commission and the chamber of commerce designate Baseball Appreciation Day to honor H. L. Kokernot Jr. and the Alpine Cowboys. Fans are urged to attend Kokernot Park for an afternoon game against Refugio, a strong foe after a 15-0 loss and a 2-1 rematch. The Cowboys also host Refugio at Kokernot field Saturday and meet the Tri-Service Drillers of Midland next Sunday.

City water well to be tested near Kokernot lodge
The city water well east of Kokernot lodge north of Alpine creek was below 200 ft Wednesday with plans to drill to 250 ft and test. Much water is reported in the hole but no test has yet been made. Excavation on the underground dam at the same site is about 75% finished and a dam to trap underground water is planned if sufficient water develops.

Summer Tours To Start Next Week From Sul Ross College
Final plans are set for two Sul Ross college Study While You Travel tours. One Greyhound bus will tour the Pacific Northwest with John Long as business manager and Alex Hansen in charge. the eastern tour shifts leadership to Dr. Virginia Link. The western route begins July 19, includes Juarez and Grand Canyon, while the eastern trip visits New Orleans to New York City. Dr. G. P. Smith oversees credit for the tours.

Work Begins On New Low Water Pecos River Bridge On Highway 90
Alpine reports that in July specialized crews started work on the Pecos River canyon bridge on U S 90 between Del Rio and Langtry. The project aims to lower the road into the canyon with steep grades, as piers were washed away, delaying through traffic toward Van Horn Marfa Alpine and Fort Stockton.

City Hikes Water Use Charge to Curb Waste
Alpine city commission enacted an ordinance raising rates on consumption over 10 000 gallons monthly to 50 cents per 1000 gallons in a bid to reduce outside water use amid a dry spell. The measure effective today follows first publication and will stay until conditions warrant change as wells show 19 million gallons pumped in a 30 day period ending June 26.

Ranchmen in Brewster County learn that rangeland pitting with a mechanical device holds more water, boosts soil penetration, and aids plant growth.
