Fire, likely incendiary, destroyed the Santa Fe railroad bridge over the Rio Grande between Presidio Ojinaga and the border early Sunday. Twelve piers on the Mexican side and 29 on the American side burned, leaving eight central piers intact. Built in 1900 at a cost around a quarter million dollars, the bridge linked Mexican and Texas lines and spurred a regional celebration. Despite efforts by residents, officials say the steel and iron structure is a near-total loss, with replacement needed for pilings and girders.
