Amblin Around Notes on Route 66 Crew Stop

Amblin Around reports that three vans hauling crew and equipment of the Route 66 TV series paused at the Ponderosa Motor Inn en route to Corpus Christi. The stars were not present, as they usually travel to filming locations, with Austin and Kerrville areas cited for earlier publicity.

1-H Awards Presented At Annual Banquet Here

One hundred fifty persons attended the Achievement Awards Banquet of the Brewster Jeff Davis 4-H Club at the Community Center. Awards honored members across categories such as Achievement, Agricultural, Alum Recognition, Beef, Leadership, Citizenship, Wildlife Conservation, Range Management, Gold Star, Silver Clover, Gold Lover, and various pins and certificates. The event, hosted by 4-H Club mothers, featured J. Wright and Judy Owens as presenters with noted prizes from multiple sponsors including Ford, International Harvester, Sears Roebuck, and Texan agricultural groups.

Annual Highland Hereford Bull and Commercial Heifer Sale Planned

Plans are set for the 9th annual Highland Hereford Bull and Commercial Heifer Sale to be held at Marfa on Wednesday November 13 1963. Alpine chairman Frank N Newsom announces the sale by the Highland Hereford Breeders Association featuring 50 registered Hereford bulls and 250 commercial heifers. Auctioneer Col Walter Britton will preside with Johnny Jones Brady fieldmen for the American Hereford Association in attendance. The sale committee includes ranchmen Joe Lane Pete Kennedy Jim Bob Steen Rust Largent Davis David Largent Keesey Kimball and Frank N Newsom all of Alpine and nearby towns.

Alpine Public Schools Plan Annual Science Fair

Supt J C Frost announced that Alpine Public Schools will hold a science fair during Public School Week March 4 8 1963. Students from grades 4 through 8 will display projects at Central and Centennial with ribbons for first second and third places per grade and sweepstakes awards for best elementary project and best general science biology and chemistry projects. John Robbins visited family then left for overseas duty after a Navy leave.

Alpine High hosts 10th annual girls basketball tourney

Alpine High School and seven teams enter a two day tournament on Jan 18 and 19 at Alpine High Gym and nearby schools. Alpine girls aim to defend their title after a 48-26 win over Valentine led by Rosie Adamson 19 points. B team also won 51-12 with top scorer Sylvia Cobos 17.

Charles Boreing appointed president of the Alpine Chamber of Commerce at the Holland Hotel banquet succeeding Norman Beard. Annual Big Bend Livestock Show Opens With Record Prospects

The 19th Big Bend Livestock Show begins at 7 30 p m in the Big Bend Wool and Mohair Co warehouse with 16 fat steers 11 Quarter Horse colts and 150 fat lambs expected. Judging starts 10 a m horse show with Ralph Dye. fat lambs judged by M A Sarber around 12 30 p m. Grand champion steer judged by Immy Taylor at 7 p m Auctioneer Ouis Whitten burg of Del Rio. Voters Back Hospital Expansion in Brewster County

Nearly 500 residents voted for a county funds transfer to add 16 private rooms to Brewster County Memorial Hospital. The measure passed 458 to 15, with a federal grant covering part of the $235,508 cost and the rest to be paid from county funds.

Lake Hearing Monday In Austin On Calamity Creek Dam

A hearing in Austin at 10 a m Monday January 21 will consider Mrs. George A Brown's request to build a dam on Calamity Creek about 13 miles south of Alpine. The dam would be 100 feet high and 609 feet wide, creating a 6 000 acre foot lake with seven miles of shoreline. The lake would reach 85 feet deep at the dam and 22 feet deep elsewhere. Support from local groups is noted and many residents plan to attend the Texas Water Commission hearing at Sam Houston State Office Building.
