A bulletin from a sailor in New Guinea reports a humorous indoctrination course for U S soldiers returning to the States. It mocks civilian life, detailing manners for breakfasts, seating in theaters, hotel stays, and appropriate behavior, with caution that some rules may seem odd but are intended to smooth adjustment after long service.
Martha Levi Mattie Lee Justice Withers, wife of Robert C Withers, died suddenly last Saturday in Fort Davis from an indigestion related heart failure. Born Aug 23 1886 near Huntsville Texas she taught in several districts before marrying in Buna 1913. The couple later moved to Fort Davis where she served as English art and social studies teacher and was a writer poet and artist.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at three o'clock for Mrs Mary Elizabeth Shelton at the Church of Christ in Sanderson. Elvin Best and J S. Batey led the rites. she had lived in Alpine since 1920 and moved to Sanderson about a year ago. Surviving children include A. J. Shelton of Sanderson, Mrs Oscar Miles of Wenatchee, Wash., and Mrs Pink Phelps of Burbank, Cal. interment was in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Globe Aircraft Fort Worth Air Transport division maps six routes for Community Air Service in Texas. Fort Worth clover leaf routes connect with San Antonio links while one route serves Houston. Route 5 begins and ends in San Antonio with stops including San Marcos Austin Brownwood San Angelo Pecos Alpine Marfa Dryden Del Rio and Uvalde. Round trip duration given as 6 hours 50 minutes.
State Guardsmen from Marfa Terlingua Marathon and Alpine conducted an overnight field exercise 40 miles south of Alpine on the O2 ranch last weekend. A field order described simulated bandits crossing Grande and taking cover west of Santiago Peak. Capt Ari W Fulcher led troops, with Alpine officers directing units. wind hampered some attempts to mount a noncombatant.
Mrs. Mace opens a School of Dance in the sun room of the Holland residence at 300 E Ave C. She previously ran a Dallas dancing school for five years and joins her husband now stationed at the nearby air base. Notice invites support for War Bonds and Stamps to help curb inflation.
Dr Lavanture of Marta was elected president and Dr Joel Wright of Alpine secretary of the Big Bend Medical Society at a meeting held here Tuesday. They were named delegates to the state convention in Galveston May 10 and chosen on the Legislation committee.
Jack Mord of Alpine arrived on furlough to visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hord. A top turret gunner on a B-17 Fortress he served in England and flew many missions over enemy territory. He received the Air Medal for meritorious achievement in sustained bomber operations over Europe and will report February 4 at Santa Ana for further assignment.
The Alpine Bucks A team defeated Buena Vista 19 14 in the first game and lost 19 14 the next night. Vranga led the Bucks with 17 total points across both games while F Akins paced Buena Vista with 16. Bucks B team lost both contests 25 23 and 17 9. Next they travel to Maria High for a conference double header at 7 and 8 PM.
Forty two attended the Lions Club gathering at the college cafeteria Monday night to install officers during the annual Ladies Night. James Kemp became president with C. M. Corkran, A. J. Bierschwale, J. W. Shepherd as vice presidents. O. E. Sperry treasurer and Rev. Marvin Williams as reporter. Fred Rogers led the installation. welcome address by M. P. Slover preceded a musical program.
Corporal Vernon McCall U S Marines arrived home last Friday for a visit with his parents after 23 months in the Pacific. He served in a communications unit of an infantry regiment and took part in two major engagements, coming through safely. McCall enlisted three years ago next March and will report to San Diego for a probable permanent assignment after a 30 day furlough.
The Brewster county local board announces that Selective Service regulations have been amended to provide that if a registrant voluntarily leaves the employment for which he was deferred he shall be reclassified into a class available for military service Registrants should consult their local board for a determination before changing employment.
A farewell dinner for Mr. and Mrs. Eduanto Prado at Toltec cafe featured Prado, Mexico Consul in Alpine, bidding farewell as Esteban Walker Jacquier succeeds him. Mayor Stars and attendees praised relations between Mexican and local communities. Prado’s 20 years in consular service noted. A plan for a Great Bend International Park, spanning Texas and Mexico, is discussed with President Roosevelt and Mexican President Camacho, seeking cross-border development after the war.
Alpine FFA held its regular meeting at the V A building. Reports by secretary and treasurer were approved. Mrs. Mitchell announced prizes won in the area including first in beef cattle and poultry, first in gardens, second in sheep, totaling 20.80. Members discussed sending flowers to sick members, subscribing to the American Hereford Journal, organizing a school band, sending overs to Bruce Fulcher, and ordering 100 FFA windshield stickers.
1st Lt. Philip L. Newsom, bombardier on a B 17 crew, visits his parents Mr and Mrs Ray Newsom and his wife and three month old daughter after seven months in the European theater. He completed his 50 missions and is back in the States on leave. Philip earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.
Sheriff Clarence Hord and Texas Ranger Joe Bridge with Presidio County officials investigated a skeleton found off a trail from Fresno mine to the Rio Grande near the border. Identified as Francisco Ramos, about 25, a former summer carpenter at the mine. Bones indicated death over a year ago. skull crushed by blunt instrument. No arrests were made.
