The 1920 issue marks the first of Volume 30 for The Avalanche. After five months at the helm, the editors thank readers, old friends, and new supporters and pledge improvements in appearance and usefulness. They seek continued help to make the weekly paper stronger and more helpful to the community.
A brief New Year note from B. Hudspenth, Congressman, offering thanks for Prosperous Year wishes and hoping for a successful 1920. The entry mentions church services at Presbyterian Church with pastor H. J. Reemtema away at Sanderson and a 10 a. m. Sunday School.
Sunday activities include 10 a m Sunday School and 1 p m Sacrament service with Rev CK Campbell preaching at both 1 p m and 6 30 p m. Glad to see new faces. helpers urged to join. Also Christian Church Bible School at 9 a m and worship at 11 a m and 7 p m. Saint James Episcopal holds 10 a m Sunday School and 7 p m services with Rev CS McClellan rector. all welcome.
The Bible Study class of the W H M of the Methodist Church met Monday afternoon at the church for an engaging session. They study The Lives of Famous Women of the Bible, detailing history and spiritual significance. Superintendent of Study assisted by Mesdames Walker Baines Webb Anderson Davidson English and Roulon.
State county and school taxes are due to avoid a 10 percent penalty which takes effect February 1 1920. Taxpayers, including veterans, may file affidavits to relieve penalties and costs. The State of Texas issues a publication summons to multiple defendants and unknown heirs in Brewster County. It directs service by newspaper over four weeks prior to a February 1020 court return, for a real property title dispute involving Robert T Hicks and related land blocks, parcels, and warrants.
Defendants and their unknown heirs claim the land described in Survey 9 Block G18 Abstract 2676 and related tracts, while plaintiff alleges dispossession and seeks cancellation of the claim.
