Second ballots due January 14 with Jim Francois and Frank McCollum in charge.
Three Alpine families attended the funeral of Mrs. Dan Murrah of Pandale sister in law of R H Murrah of Alpine held in Del Rio last Friday. She died December 28 at the home of her sister in law Mrs Grover C Poole while visiting. Attending from Alpine were Mr and Mrs H Murrah Mr and Mrs Ds Murrah and family and Mr and Mrs J C Roark and family. The late Mrs Murrah was born to Mertz on December 8 1902.
Alpine High school FFA head Allen reports Odessa stock show action was rough with four Alpine lambs in light weight. one place winner fed by John Haglund. Alpine members to sell three lambs here today and next compete at the Big Bend Livestock Show in Alpine on January 21.
County Judge Felix McGaughy was told the state will furnish aid for Juanita Vasquez the orphan girl burned weeks ago. Juanita is at Hotel Dieu in El Paso while guardians Mr and Mrs Juan Soto cannot act. Rev Gabriel Lopez of Our Lady of Peace Alpine said donations totaling 62 dollars have been raised for Juanita's hospital care in Alpine and El Paso with contributions invited to the church or Hotel Dieu.
Glenn Burgess owner moves Big Bend Camera and Curio store and bus station from 211 E Holland to 115 E Holland between The Model and Krenek's Barber Shop. New site adds about 30 percent more floor space. The firm acts as a bus agent for Union Trail Ways and Trans Pecos Bus Lines. Conference to meet in Alpine at 7 p.m.

Poll tax sales in Brewster County are set to rise before the January 31 deadline as election year activity increases. Through Wednesday 469 taxes have been purchased, with an estimated 1800 to 2000 likely to be issued. Alpine votes April 7. incumbent officials up for reelection include Sheriff Jim Skinner, Tax Collector Bruce Sutton, County Attorney, and several Alpine and Marathon officials.
Thirty five freight cars derailed at Lobo on the Southern Pacific line eighty six miles northwest of Alpine at :50 p.m. last Sunday. No injuries were reported. The line on the side track reopened at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Officials cited a broken truck side as the cause. The last car was scheduled for pickup today. A second SP derailment of 35 cars was reported near Lufkin yesterday morning.
Sul Ross Alpine Square Dance Group holds its monthly dance at 7 30 p m Thursday in the college gym. Besides dancing the group hopes to choose a name for their club and invites all students and residents interested in dancing to attend.
Frank Duane Young and Ray Bradford announce the Big Bend Sportsman Club will pay $15 for a 38 mm film strip viewer for Alpine Film Library. Demand kept delivery at about 90 days as orders stacked up. School officials say the gift enhances the district's projection teaching and equipment. Gulf Oil No 1 Combs brewster wildcat drilled at 3528 feet in lime and shale. Pure Oil No 1 Massie West Brewster wildcat 12 miles SW of Alpine at 1380 feet.
Miles Pierce an Alpine breeder won eight of nine firsts at the Sand Hills Stock Show in Odessa. Colonel Kingthree Altuda was grand champion ram and Miss Happy Chance II grand champion ewe. Pierce plans to exhibit at the Big Bend Livestock Show in Alpine January 21 and may show elsewhere in Texas.

Sul Ross State College resumed classes Wednesday without incident. President Dr. Bryan Wildenthal outlined the semester program at a general faculty meeting. No date set for disciplinary committee hearing on Buddy Calcote case. Calcote suspended just before Christmas holidays following a heated discussion on campus conditions.
New officers of the Alpine Cemetery Association will be elected at its yearly meeting at 7 30 p m Wednesday January 11 in the Chamber of Commerce building. All members and interested persons are requested to attend says president George J Kemen Jr.
M G Mixon of Texas A&M College conducts a water distribution school at Sul Ross State College Alpine. Water superintendents plumbers and interested persons are invited. Meetings run nightly from 7 pm in the Main Building basement. Sessions Monday through Friday next week, three hours each, earning 20 hours credit toward State Board of Health certificates.
Alpine business owner Fred M. Jack says Granada Theatre will receive new carpets and decor soon. He returned from Dallas and notes Hollywood producers delayed big pictures for 1956, allowing Alpine to book many major films in a short period.
David G. Walker of Alpine, UT Austin student, earned a Humble Oil & Refining Co. chemistry fellowship, per UT news release.
Residents of the Terlingua School District in Brewster County voted 9 to 0 to boost the school tax. County Judge Felix McGaughy reported the election held last December with H.R. L. Cartledge presiding. The tax rises from 10 cents to a higher maximum.
