Alpine Chamber of Commerce directors slate named

Ballots mailed today list eight nominees for four Alpine chamber director positions. Top vote getters on the first ballot were Gilbert Bell Joe Brady Edgar Glasscock Jett Graham Dick Rogers Jack Stowell Forrest Walker and Paul Weyerts. Rogers has previously served as a director. Second ballots due January 14 with Jim Francois and Frank McCollum in charge.

Three Families Attend Murrah Rites In Del Rio

Three Alpine families attended the funeral of Mrs. Dan Murrah of Pandale sister in law of R H Murrah of Alpine held in Del Rio last Friday. She died December 28 at the home of her sister in law Mrs Grover C Poole while visiting. Attending from Alpine were Mr and Mrs H Murrah Mr and Mrs Ds Murrah and family and Mr and Mrs J C Roark and family. The late Mrs Murrah was born to Mertz on December 8 1902.

Alpine FFA fields three lambs at Odessa sale

State Will Aid Juanita Vasquez

County Judge Felix McGaughy was told the state will furnish aid for Juanita Vasquez the orphan girl burned weeks ago. Juanita is at Hotel Dieu in El Paso while guardians Mr and Mrs Juan Soto cannot act. Rev Gabriel Lopez of Our Lady of Peace Alpine said donations totaling 62 dollars have been raised for Juanita's hospital care in Alpine and El Paso with contributions invited to the church or Hotel Dieu.

Curio Store and Bus Station Relocate in Alpine

Glenn Burgess owner moves Big Bend Camera and Curio store and bus station from 211 E Holland to 115 E Holland between The Model and Krenek's Barber Shop. New site adds about 30 percent more floor space. The firm acts as a bus agent for Union Trail Ways and Trans Pecos Bus Lines. Conference to meet in Alpine at 7 p.m.

Poll Tax Sales Expected to Surge in Brewster County

Poll tax sales in Brewster County are set to rise before the January 31 deadline as election year activity increases. Through Wednesday 469 taxes have been purchased, with an estimated 1800 to 2000 likely to be issued. Alpine votes April 7. incumbent officials up for reelection include Sheriff Jim Skinner, Tax Collector Bruce Sutton, County Attorney, and several Alpine and Marathon officials.

Freight Cars Derail Near Alpine on SP Line

Thirty five freight cars derailed at Lobo on the Southern Pacific line eighty six miles northwest of Alpine at :50 p.m. last Sunday. No injuries were reported. The line on the side track reopened at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Officials cited a broken truck side as the cause. The last car was scheduled for pickup today. A second SP derailment of 35 cars was reported near Lufkin yesterday morning.

Pierce Sheep Sweep Top Odessa Honors

Miles Pierce an Alpine breeder won eight of nine firsts at the Sand Hills Stock Show in Odessa. Colonel Kingthree Altuda was grand champion ram and Miss Happy Chance II grand champion ewe. Pierce plans to exhibit at the Big Bend Livestock Show in Alpine January 21 and may show elsewhere in Texas.

Tax Hike Favorable in Terlingua School District Vote

Residents of the Terlingua School District in Brewster County voted 9 to 0 to boost the school tax. County Judge Felix McGaughy reported the election held last December with H.R. L. Cartledge presiding. The tax rises from 10 cents to a higher maximum.
