Alpine headlines this week with a Hollywood crowning broadcast boosting local library funding built by residents. The first baby of 1950 arrives as Cavness weighs nine pounds, bringing prizes from merchants. Harley May of Sul Ross is elected president of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, with a new secretary manager to be based at Sul Ross after February.
Slow rains last Thursday and Friday brought relief to arid ranges west of the Pecos and across the state. Precipitation ranged from .32 inches in Alpine to 1.40 inches south of Alpine in the O2 ranch country, with Marathon and Kimball areas reporting up to an inch. The Alpine area total for 1949 rose to just over 16 inches, about four inches above 1948, yielding a five year average around 16 inches. A cold snap followed, delivering freezing temperatures to the Alpine region.
The 1950 Magnolia calendars distributed nationwide spotlight Alpine with Sul Ross and the Alpine Valley as key images. Texas scenes dominate the year with the Alamo, bluebonnets at Ferris, Buchanan Dam, Buzzard Roost in Big Bend, a Spur cattle tank, and Alpine publicity tied to local figures and events.
Agate hunters and visitors to the Frank Woodward ranch in 1949 came from 23 states. Mr Woodward reported 373 registrants that year with most hunting agate and some visiting. He noted shipments of agate to every state and to Canada. Mr and Mrs Jack Fruge and son returned last weekend from Kerrville visiting friends.
The first baby of 1950 for Alpine arrived at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday January 4 at Lockhart hospital. A nine pound boy, Robert Lee Cavness, is the son of Mr and Mrs Sam Cavness of Marathon. The baby earned the heavy list of prizes from Alpine merchants, sponsored by KVLF radio. Dr W E Lockhart attended.
Alpine post office reports a 10 percent increase in receipts for 1949, totaling 36088.91 dollars, up 3003.64 from 1948. Mrs. Annie K. Turney, postmaster, notes steady yearly gains with the final quarter surpassing the 10,000 dollar mark. Gene Benson and Cas Edwards traveled to El Paso for a few days this week.
Alpine records show 1949 precipitation at 16.13 inches, surpassing 1948’s 11.89 inches. September led the year with 4.29 inches, while November and March were notably dry. Monthly totals ranged from trace in November to 4.29 inches in September.
Notice to patrons from D. M. Bennett confirms renewal of the lease with Mr. M. A. Webb for 1950. The agreement runs from January 1 to December 31, thanking readers for past favors and wishing happiness and prosperity in the new year.
Edna Phillips, brilliant coloratura soprano, appears at First Christian church in Marfa next Wednesday January 11 at 8 pm presented by Marfa Community Concerts. Phillips rose from a billing clerk to Toscanini soloist with a storied training across Sacred Heart Convent New England Conservatory and studies with Germaine Barre and Paul Althouse. Publicity chair Mrs. Walter Polsky notes remaining membership tickets through Mrs. John C. Mead.
Harley May of Deming New Mexico a Sul Ross student and last year’s Intercollegiate Rodeo champion was unanimously chosen president of the National Rodeo Association at a Denver directors meeting on January 23. Tommy Bell Texas Tech VP and J H Foss Washington State College publicity director were also chosen. Charlie Rankin Texas A&M secretary manager with a salary plans temporary Sul Ross offices by February 1. 29 member colleges include 15 in Texas.
The Alpine chamber of commerce reports promissory note No 2 was paid on schedule as part of the building debt retirement. Marie Van Fossan received a $50.42 C of C check including $50 principal and two months of interest at five percent. Eighty notes were sold to members to fund the project and are repaid in lieu of rent through a drawn order of payment.
Mrs. John Newell of Alpine is one of five finalists selected from thousands to be named Queen of America at Hollywood Mutual Broadcasting tomorrow. She receives a $500 gift order and El Progreso club awards. Newell, mother of three, rebuilt Alpine library space and oversaw cataloging growth from 300 volumes to 8000. The Queen will be announced after 1 pm on the Mutual network KVLF and Cactus network.
Mr and Mrs James H Logan and children escaped serious injury when their 1947 Cadillac was broadside by a car driven by Frank Friend near Barnhart on a holiday visit. Friend was seriously injured. the Logans drove home Sunday in a new San Angelo purchased Cadillac.
January highlights include Del Rio and Winter Garden Telephone Co taking over an exchange, land purchases in Big Bend area, and new county officials. Rainfall totals reach two inches as cold waves hit the Alpine region. Sonny Uranga and Bobby Hammons win the 4-H livestock show. Funeral for Alpine pioneer Thomas Cartwright. February sees a minor Fort Davis earthquake and cold snaps. Alpine school and city officials adjust contracts and facilities while new Green Cafe opens and street-marking begins. March covers U.S. 90-67 project progress, a bond election, and auto accident funerals. April notes exhibition baseball at Kokernot Field, water and sewer bonds, and leadership wins in FFA. May reports rains, bank leadership change, science meeting at Sul Ross, and summer recreation planning. June features memorial services, Border Patrol building remodeling, Sul Ross enrollment rise, and local business changes.
Fort Stockton residents will view the modern $250000 Memorial hospital on Sunday January 8 as part of its open house. The facility includes 23 patient beds a surgery suite clinical laboratory and a modern kitchen with public areas. A six member board of managers appointed by the Pecos county commissioners will oversee both this hospital and a new General hospital at Iraan.
