Rio Grande May Never Become the Big River Again

LAREDO experts say the Rio Grande will not regain historic levels due to upstream dams and reservoirs. Hydraulic engineer Karl F. Keeler notes US irrigation fell from 10,000 acres in 1900 to 800,000 on the US side by 1950 while Mexico irrigated nearly as much. Small dams and soil tanks further reduce flood runoff, and the drought since March 1943 marks the greatest cumulative Rio Grande water shortage on record.
