The Alpine community celebrated a bright Christmas with standout decorations and a festive mood, earning praise from locals and a visiting former resident. The year closed with thanks to readers for support and a hopeful wish for 1948. Mr. and Mrs. Florian Kolodzie visited San Antonio over the weekend.
Washington imposes limits on park mailings as Big Bend National Park faces a cutback in informational leaflets and replies. The economy order caps National Park Service mailings at 310,000 for the year, with Big Bend’s normal 400 pieces per month far exceeding the limit. The bulletin notes no job inquiries or informational requests will be answered while funds for stamps are restricted. Former minister James A. Fry will visit Alpine Church of Christ next week to speak Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
Clyde Johnson is the new manager of Alpine Motor Supply effective Jan 1, replacing Earl Bowers who resigned. The announcement came from Chris P. Weinbrenner owner of Anthony Auto Parts warehouse El Paso who bought the business last April. Johnson and his wife with three children reside temporarily at Grandview Courts.
Mr and Mrs Walter Lee announce the birth of a daughter Dianna on December 24 weighing 6 pounds 8 ounces. Mr and Mrs Frank Smith announce a son Maher Ringo born December 25. Mr and Mrs G C McDaniel Jr of Alpine announce a daughter Jill born December 28 weighing 6 pounds 2 ounces. Mrs McDaniel is Evelyn Whiteside daughter of Mr and Mrs R A Whiteside of Alpine.

The Alpine post office posted an 8 percent increase in 1947 receipts over 1946 after a dip in 1946 following the return of troops. Mrs. Annie K. Turney, postmaster, reported total annual receipts of $30,692.86 for 1947 versus $28,355.56 in 1946, with all quarters except the first showing year over year gains.
Mrs. Fry and her two younger children Robert and Danny will visit and stay as guests in the T. H. Etheridge and Claude R. Garner homes during the stay.
Miss Jeanette Belvin enjoyed the holiday season with relatives in Lake Charles Louisiana.
J. T. Jack Johnson announced candidacy for Brewster County sheriff assessor and tax collector. Alpine resident and current precinct constable seeks voters in July primaries, pledging efficient administration if elected.
Snow blanketed Alpine with 7.2 inches as major developments unfold through January including changes in city staff, park improvements, grants for Starns Field, business sales, and the Big Bend region’s road and tourism projects.
The Church of Christ in Alpine will dedicate its new chapel on College Avenue with an 11 a.m. Sunday service led by Dr. G. H. Showalter of Austin. He will also speak at the afternoon and night services, joined by his wife editor of The Christian Home.

Fort Bliss hosts Fort Davis High School band and 15 bands from Texas New Mexico and Arizona for the New Year parade festivities in El Paso. Bands will stay on post with rooms mess halls and chaperones. Maj Gen John L Homer and Mrs Homer plan New Year Eve dance and military facilities will assist housing meals and medical care as needed.
The city commission approved widening North Fifth Street from the bridge near Central Ward school to the north edge. The State Highway Department will fund curb to curb paving and city to acquire 10 extra feet of right of way. Sixteen terms: cost estimated at 36300 dollars with 10 feet land need. most owners agree to deed. some have declined or did not respond. The project improves approach from State Highway 118, reduces hazards, improves drainage, and boosts adjacent property values.
December registrations raised Brewster county yearly total to 242, a new high for the year and 37 below the pre war 1941 total of 279 licenses. The list names buyers and vehicles including J. J. Roberts Marathon Chevolet truck and Mrs Mary E Wade Alpine Frazer sedan among others.
