Alpine Christmas shines with civic spirit and lights

The Alpine community celebrated a bright Christmas with standout decorations and a festive mood, earning praise from locals and a visiting former resident. Park curtails franked mail under economy order at Big Bend

Washington imposes limits on park mailings as Big Bend National Park faces a cutback in informational leaflets and replies. The economy order caps National Park Service mailings at 310,000 for the year, with Big Bend’s normal 400 pieces per month far exceeding the limit. The bulletin notes no job inquiries or informational requests will be answered while funds for stamps are restricted. Former minister James A. Fry will visit Alpine Church of Christ next week to speak Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Alpine Motor Supply Names Clyde Johnson New Manager

Clyde Johnson is the new manager of Alpine Motor Supply effective Jan 1, replacing Earl Bowers who resigned. The announcement came from Chris P. Weinbrenner owner of Anthony Auto Parts warehouse El Paso who bought the business last April. Johnson and his wife with three children reside temporarily at Grandview Courts.

Alpine Post Office Receipts Rise 8 Percent in 1947

The Alpine post office posted an 8 percent increase in 1947 receipts over 1946 after a dip in 1946 following the return of troops. Mrs. Annie K. Turney, postmaster, reported total annual receipts of $30,692.86 for 1947 versus $28,355.56 in 1946, with all quarters except the first showing year over year gains.

Fort Davis Band Guests Arrive for Sun Carnival at Fort Bliss

City Accepts Highway Dept Offer To Extend Paving

The city commission approved widening North Fifth Street from the bridge near Central Ward school to the north edge. The State Highway Department will fund curb to curb paving and city to acquire 10 extra feet of right of way. Sixteen terms: cost estimated at 36300 dollars with 10 feet land need. most owners agree to deed. some have declined or did not respond. The project improves approach from State Highway 118, reduces hazards, improves drainage, and boosts adjacent property values.

December Auto Registrations Boost Brewster County Total

December registrations raised Brewster county yearly total to 242, a new high for the year and 37 below the pre war 1941 total of 279 licenses. The list names buyers and vehicles including J. J. Roberts Marathon Chevolet truck and Mrs Mary E Wade Alpine Frazer sedan among others.
