Alpine High Girls Face Winters in Regional Playoff

Alpine and Winters meet in a regional first round with Alpine holding a 16-5 record and Winters 21-4. Alpine, coached by Juanita Gonzales, features Amelia Rodriguez Cynthia Neu and Alicia Garcia on offense with a strong defense led by Ana Valero and Henrietta Milan. Tickets are 50 cents for students and 1 dollar for adults with advance sales at the high school office.

Rev Best Accepts Call As Alpine Baptist Pastor

Rev James R Best of Lufkin has accepted the pastorate at First Baptist Church in Alpine. He will move with his family in early March and preach his first sermon on Sunday March 5. He has led Clawson Baptist Church in Lufkin since June 1966 and previously served in Eustace Beaumont and Nome. He was born in Woodville and holds a BS from East Texas Baptist College and a BD from Southwestern Seminary.

Sul Ross Lobos seek back to back vs Sam Houston Bears and S F Austin

Sul Ross carries a four game win streak into road games tonight at Huntsville against Sam Houston and Saturday in Nacogdoches versus Stephen F. Austin. The Lobos won 49-46 at home over an Indian squad and edged East Texas State 34-31 in overtime on a prior outing.

Slape Named Lone Star Player of the Week

Gregg Slape of Sul Ross Lobos earns Lone Star Conference player of the week after guiding the team from four straight wins. The Odessa native scored 24 points with 12 of 20 shooting and grabbed six rebounds in an 84 81 overtime victory over St Fast Texas, then added 11 points in a 49 40 win over McMurry.

Homer Hudgins First to File for City Election

Homer Hudgins manager of West Texas Utilities in Alpine filed for re election Tuesday afternoon as he seeks a third term on the City Council. Terms of D McCollister and Alberto Rojo expire this year but neither has announced plans. filing deadline is March 4 with the city secretary.

Jack Brock resigns as Alpine Public Schools superintendent after a policy clash with the school board. Clarence Winn named acting superintendent and Homer Jefferson acting high school principal. Newbury Named NASA Special Award of Merit Recipient

Newbury, director of college information at Sul Ross State College and sports information head for the Lone Star Conference of Texas, will receive the NASA Special Award of Merit. The honor cites his work in sports publicity for Sul Ross and the Lone Star Conference and NASA District IV. The award will be presented March 17 in Kansas City and May at a Hall of Fame luncheon.

Alpine City Council Approves Renewal of HUD Plan

Alpine city council met in regular session Tuesday afternoon. The mayor will prepare and submit a renewed workable plan to HUD, detailing past achievements and next year’s programs, with input from the city engineer and city secretary. The panel discussed sewer rates, declined to act on changes, and considered but did not approve moving a home to Block 12, requesting more details. A resolution was passed to extend an 8 inch pipeline from Bird Street to the Loop Road.
