Construction of the Sul Ross Memorial building progresses with most concrete poured to the first-floor level and auditorium footing complete. Engineer Carl Olson says brickwork will start in about five weeks, reinforcing steel on site, first-floor formwork begun, and first-floor pouring estimated in ten days. The structure will be fireproof with reinforced concrete and a pan system for floors, samples of brick to be used to be supplied soon. Fish and upperclassmen teased freshmen on the streets Wednesday as signs were cleaned from sidewalks.

Alpine News Denies Advertising Origin Of Statement
In a reply to last week’s Avalanche item about the Eagle Pass Guide controversy, Alpine’s editor says the alarming claim was run as advertising by a zealous supporter of J Turner Terrell. The piece notes no disclosure marked it as advertising and asserts it did not reflect Eagle Pass paper sentiment. The Alpine editor calls the Guide charge of undignified behavior a misread and attributes the paper’s tone to a lively, if irreverent, stance.
