A long Trans-Pecos column reports extremely dry conditions in the Big Bend with only about one inch of precipitation so far this year. It mentions cattle and farming impacts, local human interest items, a Pecos highway paving update, an Ozona ranch hand injury, and a Uvalde man described in rustic terms.
The report notes House bill No. 17 was dropped at Rep. Sarah Hughes of Dallas request. A Brewster county meeting condemned bills 17 19 and 20 as harmful to school and asylum lands, risking land and improvements for ranchers. The test well near Alpine spudded in by Floyd C Dodson aims for 6000 feet with a spudder to complete to at least 3500 feet.
The West Texas Historical and Scientific Society will hold its annual meeting at Sul Ross College next Friday. Dr. R. A. Studhalter of Texas Tech, Lubbock, will lecture on the Yaqui expedition during the 10:20 opening session in the general college assembly. The program lists sessions, reports, lectures by Victor J. Smith, T. L. Steiger, Lutie Britt, Oltford B. Casey, Fred Walker, Barry Scobee, Henry Pletcher, E. E. Townsend, Ida Pay Hamilton, and Judge Hayes Monahans. Tea, greenhouse visit, and an evening session feature musical numbers and a lecture on The Flag Point Massacre.
A new drug store, Pate's Par, is set to open next week in the former Pushers Drug location. WT Todd Patton, long employed at Alpine Drug, will oversee the preopening work, assisted by Dr. H. M. Jones of Martus won and B. Gras, with a local manager to be announced. The store plans fountain service and will stock new merchandise arriving this week.
Mrs E. Cross and her son H D Jack Cross plan to add a furniture line to their ladies millinery and ready to wear shop. Initial shipments have arrived and more are expected soon as they build a complete stock for customers.
The February term of district court opens in Alpine with cases on the docket including the election contest of Fi mo Johnson v W D Burcham. Jurors are summoned for early sittings as civil actions such as trespass to title and foreclosure of vendor's lien appear. A state highway beautification meeting in Alpine with about 20 participants endorses the program and outlines steps like marking historic spots and improving entrances and parks along local highways.
Washington dispatch reports Representative West of central and lower Rio Grande proposes a multi dam project from Big Bend to a large diversion dam in the lower Rio Grande area. The plan includes flood control irrigation a Pecos river site east of here and a U S Mexico treaty fronting hydroelectric works to be funded by revenue. The measure would go to the flood control committee of which he is a member.
The Sul Ross Lobos beat Texas A. and I. Javelinas in two thrilling games last Friday and Saturday, then tied Texas Tech at 21-22 in a midweek win. Tech, led by Gilmore with 21 points, won the first game 41-37, while Sul Ross swept the second with a 4 37 victory. The Rossonians prep for a two-game set with West Texas Teachers of Canyon next Monday and Tuesday.
Ollene Smith daughter of Mr and Mrs Matt Smith won the Money Night drawing at Granada Theatre Tuesday night taking the $150 prize. The message notes the next week’s prize will be $25.
Cowboys on the Smith Bros ranch four miles west of Marfa staged a playful roundup in tuxedos to mock their era of tight finances. Photographers L E Orr and J C Porter planned a newsreel as calves were branded and cattle moved while Doc Hoffman announced Highland Hereford calves sold for 1350 dollars. A celebratory rainstorm followed, ending the event on a hopeful note.
Snow and rain draped the Big Bend Highlands as a four day system drenched the region. Ranchers reported 1x inches or more in the Highland area, with rains extending from Marathon to Marfa and north toward Santa Elena. The moisture boosts winter weed growth and may reduce looming feed costs. total weekly precipitation reached 0.68 inches, bringing annual total to 15.9 inches per local records.
Tax records show 731 receipts issued countywide with payments due before February 1 still unrecorded. Deputy collector Milton Gilmer expects total receipts to reach about 760, with precinct tallies listed as Nos 1B and 1W at 395 and No 4 at 177 and No 5 at 19.
Board of Regents awarded contracts for a 54 bay native stone dormitory to E Morgan Son of El Paso with plumbing by Mosturry Plumbing Co and heating by 103 E Lamb of Alpine. Building sits behind Library and Administration buildings and will be ready in 10 days. Summer session housing for Sophie Newcomb arts students planned with Xavier Gonnalee directing. President Morelock authorized applying for a 128000 girl dormitory as a PWA project and a 25000 student hospital.
Cuthbert Carll, ace Lobo athlete, broke a leg while practicing basketball at Sul Ross gym yesterday afternoon. The injury echoes a similar break in the same place last fall during a Kingsville football outing.
