Brewster County voters paid 1462 poll taxes with 56 exceptions this year, announced Tax Collector Vic Heil. The year’s poll tax sales are 251 more than last year but below 1960’s 1469, with historical figures listed for 1947 through 1957. Cash boxes and office supplies available at The Avalanche.

C of C Joins Garden Club In Sponsoring Clean Up Drive
Alpine Chamber of Commerce directors voted to join the Garden Club in a clean up and paint up drive for a more beautiful Alpine and donated 25 dollars in prize money. The Garden Club will award prizes, and the special events committee will meet Friday with Garden Club members and other city and county groups. Norman Beard heads the new board as President with new directors including Juagins Paul Goodman Jack Frost and Bob Strom. Committee chairs were named across development budget finance legislative membership ranch relations retail trade publicity and events sports Sul Ross development transportation and communications. The board urged the transportation chair to explore joining the Midland Odessa group for third level passenger and freight service in the Alpine Marfa area. Membership announced four new members joined in January.

Enrollment at Sul Ross Reaches Record Spring Total
Registrar Glenn Davis reports spring on campus enrollment at Sul Ross State College reached 1103 students, the largest in history. The figure excludes off campus students and compares to 973 registered last spring.

Alpine records show January precipitation at .29 inches with a brutal cold spell on January 9 and 10 bringing the temperature to 12 below zero and daily amounts of .08 inches on the 9th, .12 on the 24th, and .09 on the 25th. total January 1961 rainfall was 1.12 inches. Civil Defense Director Joe Baxter joined a one day exercise with a 200-bed emergency hospital unit in San Antonio on February 3 with instructors from the Bexar County Graduate Nurses Association.

Sky Divers Set Fly In and Sun Anniversary at Marfa Alpine
Big Bend Civil Air Patrol squadron met at Marfa Alpine Airport last Sunday to plan a Fly in and Sun anniversary event set for Saturday Feb 24. The day opens with a show by Sky Divers from Paso and a 11 a.m. act by MicCassland Stunt Flyers from Paso followed by a barbecue at noon. The afternoon features inspection of 1962 model planes from Cessna Piper Beechcraft and Mooney. Officials from CAP and West Texas groups are invited with invited guests by invitation only. Planning includes customs inspection station hopes and a third level air route for the Big Bend area. New office and hangar room were opened with county officials providing facilities.
