Lobos Feted On Departure For Florida

The Sul Ross Lobos received a cheerful send off on Christmas afternoon as they prepared to travel by bus to Orlando Florida to face Murray State College Kentucky on New Year’s night at the Starnes home. Coach Red Pierce urged the team to depart promptly as night conditions worsened. Absent was Jack Belcher due to injuries from a recent auto accident near San Angelo. Belcher suffered facial and back injuries requiring stitches. Hosts included Jerry Starnes boosters and local officials gave best wishes for the trip and game.

Polio Fund Drive Seeks 350000 in Gonzales Support

Children Happy as Legion Santa Delivers Christmas Cheer

The American Legion distributed toys candy fruit and nuts plus food and clothing to fourteen families on Christmas Eve. Some recipients lived near Paisano and the air base. Old Santa rode a pickup and brought happiness to about 45 children. Legion thanks donors for toys and money.

Mustang Band Heads to Sun Bowl From Alpine

Alpine Telephone Co. sells the Mustang Band the Pride of Marathon as they prepare to travel to El Paso for the Sun Carnival. The 45 member group under E Joe Lee rehearses for the parade on January 1 and will represent Marathon, with funds raised by the Marathon School Board and Parent-Teacher Association supporting new instruments and regalia.

Lobo Fans Hear Play by Play of Tangerine Bowl

Sul Ross Lobos supporters can hear a live play by play of the Tangerine Bowl tomorrow night at 7 Alpine time. Jack Hawkins will report for the Cactus network KVLF Alpine KIM Pec KVKM Monahans. The Lobos arrive in Orlando for workouts after a Florida trip escorted by state police amid a 10 0 bowl record versus Murray State.

Japanese PT boat to be shown at City Hall exhibit

A Japanese death by own action PT boat will be exhibited at City Hall in Alpine next Wednesday January 5. The 18 foot boat features a 675 pound anti sub depth bomb and a 50 mph speed, with a captured engine. The Navy Club of U S A tour supports welfare and rehabilitation programs with free admission and donations welcome.

Fort Bliss to Host Sun Carnival Bands

Fort Bliss will host 10 visiting bands for the Sun carnival from Dec 30 to Jan 2. More than 600 students including nine public and high school bands and one college band from Eastern New Mexico College at Portales will perform. Bands arrive from Vaughn Socorro Marfa and others, with a New Year’s Eve dance planned and quarters arranged for girls and boys separately.

Dr. Jesse H. Baird moderator of the U S Presbyterian General Assembly will visit Alpine January 6. He will speak at Sul Ross College at 10 30 a m be a noon guest of the Rotary Club and address the Presbyterian church at 7 30 p m. The Presbytery of El Paso moves its meeting to Alpine January 6 7.

New Owners To Continue Alpine Exchange Expansion

Alpine telephone exchange changes hands as Del Rio and Winter Garden Tel Co assumes operation at midnight. Al Jennings who built the Alpine system since 1938 keeps other exchanges in Texas and New Mexico. Don Hunsaker of San Angelo leads the new management with plans for further improvements as materials allow.

Alpine Schools to Resume January 3

Sept Peyton Cain announced Alpine schools will reopen Monday January 3. The band plans to return from El Paso Saturday after the Sun Carnival parade on January 1. Routine holiday work included cleaning and waxes. Central High boiler was recoated. a heating leak remains unfixed. Midterms are January 19 to 21. no term break. second semester starts January 24. school closes May 27.
