Miss Alice Cowan 60, dean of women and professor of foreign languages at Sul Ross College, died in a San Angelo hospital after a wreck on U S Highway 67 near San Angelo. She was en route to Mineola for a nephew’s wedding when her car struck a bridge abutment. Born in Stockton California, she studied at Texas University Columbia and California University. Survivors include two brothers Finis and Paul Cowan. Funeral was held in Dallas with interment in Dal Ing cemetery.
Alpine man and wife were riding in a car on Highway 118 near Jackson when the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and rolled over. The man, Foreman, died instantly. his wife was seriously injured but expected to survive. The couple had recently moved to Alpine. The body was sent for burial. Polio victim reported as eight year old Fritz Bil Weyerts diagnosed with polio. doctors expect recovery with possible lasting effects.
A Fort Davis couple Arthur and Amy Alkire marked their Golden Wedding Anniversary on December 25 1951. Married December 25 1901 in Kalamazoo Michigan they lived in Detroit Kansas City Missouri and West Texas before settling in Sierra Blanca where they owned the Hudspeth County News. The couple's long career included editorial and reporting roles at the Kansas City Star Post Journal and Globe Democrat.
City officials report new parking meters in downtown Al pine began operation last Monday. In five days ending Friday receipts averaged $28 daily, with total five day take about $141.78 plus coins. Half of receipts go to meter owners. the city covers policing costs and pays $60 per meter after six months. Officials note the period was a holiday shopping spike. many motorists downtown.
Local officers report a busy Christmas period with about 17 arrests since the holiday start, mainly for drunkenness and traffic violations. Two crashes near Twin Peaks drive-in involved 15 Alpine and Marta Latin youths, leaving eight riders in a Marta car and seven in an Alpine car injured, one severely. A separate Alpine Latin-American girl sustained major injuries in a U turn attempt struck by a pickup. One fatality occurred in a separate crash involving Alton Foreman, a Southern Pacific telegraph operator.
Mrs. G W Bales age 92 wife of Rev Glenn W Bales pastor of the First Baptist Alpine died last Saturday night at her mother Mrs G G Gibbs home in Shattuck Oklahoma after a brief illness She had been at Baylor hospital Dallas about three weeks and underwent surgery Before a second operation was deemed useless she wished to spend her last Christmas with her mother The Bales family came to Alpine last June when he was called as pastor He accompanied his wife on a plane to Oklahoma and returned to Fort Worth where their children remained awaiting a car trip to Oklahoma The couple's return from Oklahoma was followed by a highway accident involving Mr Bales but he was uninjured and the car was wrecked further details are unclear
Alfonso Natera Jr of Alpine reported missing in Korea last July is among prisoners of war held by the Communists, according to word received last weekend. He enlisted January 1949 and went overseas in April. His father is a local plumber. Another prisoner is Pvt. Dilly Jack Middleton of Ballinger, ex-student at Sul Ross, who enlisted January this year and sailed for Japan and Korea last July 7. He was reported missing October 3.
The Sul Ross Lobos edged a Mexico All-Stars team 41 to 40 in Mexico City last Saturday. The Lobos led 14-0 early and maintained the edge, using the T formation. Bob Pauley scored two touchdowns, Don Hackney added two, and Tommy Tucker booted five of six extra points to seal the win.
Miss Darlene Jones chosen to represent Sul Ross State College at the Sun Carnival in El Paso near Alpine. She will spend Christmas at San Angelo with her parents, later heading to El Paso December 26 with aunt Mrs Aubrey Lewis and sister Miss Paul Jones. She is described as well liked on campus and will return to Sul Ross.
State highway 118 from 10 miles south of Alpine to Study Butte park boundary is designated. The extension runs about 11 miles beyond Alpine with Brewster county to provide right of way free of cost. Construction to follow in the most feasible and economical manner, with property owners bearing no rights.
Miss Sarah Beth Hawkins daughter of Mr and Mrs Hawkins of Sul Ross college returns to Alpine from Dallas and eighth month after selection by Mayor John W Gillett to represent the City of Alpine at the Sun Carnival in El Paso she departs with her parents and Richard Jr for the border staying through December 28 and possibly New Year celebrations.
Mr and Mrs Snack Blocker of Odonnell spent a week in Alpine visiting friends of their son Dan Blocker a former Sul Ross student now serving on the Korean battlefield. The Avalanche regrets the error and makes a correction.
The Avalanche will begin a 50 week public relations series on January 16 1952 featuring one local firm each week. Firms pay $1.00 per week and are listed with name address and phone number for a full page ad with photo and staff. Names must be in by January 10.
