Deer and javelina harvest at Black Gap preserve

One hundred fifty-one hunters killed 60 buck deer and 20 javelinas during a special hunt at Black Gap preserve south of Marathon in Brewster County. Two hundred permits were issued. average deer weight 115 pounds, largest 165, smallest 68. Hunters came from across Texas.

U S 90 Leads Texas in Travel Rise at Meeting

Highway officials note U S 90 travel up 13 percent last year, far above the state average of 5 percent. A plan to add a four lane divided highway from San Antonio to Van Horn was discussed by the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce with emphasis on rights of way and rapid action. The Pecos River bridge completion and Big Bend Park tourism were highlighted as key factors in local business. Participants included Tom Yarbro Mars, Gene Hendryx Alpine, Levin Davis and Brewster County representatives.

Alpine High School students washed windscreens along streets and left Christmas cards with a message urging drivers to take time to drive safely. The card reads We took time to wash your windshield Won't you take time to drive safely Merry Christmas Alpine High School.

Mrs. J. W. Merrill Dies In Fort Davis

Emily Anderson Merrill, born April 23, 1872 in Harrison Kentucky, died near Old Blue Mountain Fort Davis Saturday December 15. She taught in Fort Davis from 1889, married J. W. Merrill January 10, 1894, and remained active in church and women’s work. Funeral held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church with local deacons as pallbearers.

City officials announced free parking in meters as a Christmas shopper aid. The measure took effect Tuesday December 18 and waives coin payment through Christmas Day.

CofC Officers Will Be Named At January Meet

Alpine Chamber of Commerce will elect four new directors at the Monday January 7 board meeting. Newly chosen directors include Paul Forchheimer Mitt Glasscock Claude Austin and Gene Hillger. The board also approved reworking and repainting the U S 90 sign four miles east of Sanderson and allocated 50 dollars per month from special projects funds to the Travel U S 90 Association.
