Surgeon to a Tiger at the Zoo
The Reverend Samuel Haughton performed a delicate paw operation on a tiger named Doublin to remove a gangrenous claw. A net was used to restrain the tiger while four keepers held its feet. The tigress watched and later comforted the wounded mate with purring and licking. A week later Haughton returned and the tiger allowed examination, with the pair reportedly remaining friendly for years.
