Big Bend Calves Sold Ahead Of Market Peak In Frontier Region
Calves in the Big Bend territory sold earlier than peak prices with prices ranging from about 11 to 12 cents per pound as reported by Benjamin F. Berkley of Alpine. The Highland herd typically shipped calves, but this year they were purchased earlier. Grass was scarce in April and May, wolves and panthers caused trouble, and a 100,000 acre tract near Alpine was opened for lease at a low rate. Joe J. Potter, once of Sonora, runs one of the few sheep proof fences near Boquillas, in the ebony mountains area.
