Alpine’s fire record since 1922 is cited in a report by Jolin Culberson secretary of the State Firemen’s and Fire Marshals Assn. The document shows total premiums paid of $886,011 with $164,095 in reported losses and notes strong local fire defense performance. The Big Bend Junior Football conference district committee met in Alpine with five schools and approved last year’s constitution changes refining age limits and season format.

J. Walker announces that the Texas cafe will close all next week for repainting and decorating. Mr and Mrs Walker say the period between terms will be used to give their place a thorough going over to improve eating comfort and keep the cafe inviting.
Judge Griffin an Associate Justice of the Texas Supreme Court and Mrs Griffin were guests of Mr and Mrs Val Richardson at Antelope Lodge. He holds an Admiral's commission in the Texas Navy and is a brother officer of Admirals John Gillett and Val Richardson.

The Big Bend Pistol Club held its regular monthly shoot at Presidio on August 19 with 18 shooters. Winners include Cal. Aggregate marksman Calvin Darst Jr of Presidio, sharp shooter Stanley Casner, expert Bud Fisher of Alpine, and others such as W. G. Selder and Joe Lane of Alpine and Calvin Darst of Presidio.
Jose Bustamante of Alpine was jailed after a hit and run in which John Hardaway of Crystal City suffered cuts and minor injuries. The accident occurred near Henderson Grocery on West Holland Avenue as Hardaway prepared to enter his car. Bustamante’s vehicle was found in Newtown, Alpine. Bustamante remained jailed with a $1500 bond set by Justice Garnett. Renaldo Garcia was released from custody.
Aug 28 two new mineral exploration contracts approved for Brewster county projects. Mercury is the target in Brewster with Paulsel Mining Co signing a 75000 dollar contract and Maravillas Minerals Co a 10450 dollar contract. Total for the two Texas projects 86350 dollars with 64763 funded by the government.
Alpine Cowboys survive a loose 6-4 loss to Shell Oilers in Houston tournament opening then sweep Kemah Laundry entry 11-1 in five innings led by John Boon six hitless innings and Ray VanCleef with key gains. They then tie Baytown Oilers 10-0 in six innings as Ty Newton and Mickey Marr pace the lineup while VanCleef adds multi hit effort and fielding spark.
Details for the Big Bend National Park trip to be held on Sept 12 will be finalized at a committee meeting tomorrow. Those planning to attend should return the cards mailed by sponsoring groups, including Marathon Men's Civic Lab and Alpine Chamber of Commerce. Park officials and National Park concessions are also involved.
City records show about 26 million gallons used in the 30 days ending Aug 27, roughly 3 million less than the prior period. Lower temperatures helped cut demand, with the South Hill well producing about 10 million gallons and other wells ranging from 210000 to 4 million gallons.
Pink Phelps, Alpine city night watchman, learned Monday of Francis Phelps death in Monrovia California Sunday night after a short illness. Francis 27, a World War I veteran, born in Alpine, left by plane to attend the funeral with time not learned. He survived by his widow two young children his parents and three sisters all except the father living in California.
In El Paso on August 25 26 shooters from Alpine Presidio Marathon and nearby areas competed in the West Texas Pistol championship. W T Toney Jr won the shoot for El Paso while local members like Stanley Casner Jr Harmon Remmel Joe Lane Bud Fisher Ralph Fabian and Howard Peters earned medals across marksman sharpshooter expert and calibres. The Big Bend Pistol Club teams placed with Lane Fisher Peters and Kimball leading and Bob Pope Travis Roberts captaining in team events.
Rain and showers drenched wide areas of the Big Bend Davis Mountains over the past week with a feral rain event last Monday. Fort Davis reported a half inch, Fort Stockton an inch, Kimball Ranch 0.60 inches, Parr Pate Ranch 1.50 to 2.50 inches, Sims Ranch 0.25 inch, Marathon 0.42 inch. Alpine-Terlingua corridor saw scattered rains, Marathon area total Monday brought Alpine region to 0.48 inches, August total 8.5 inches, far below last year’s 3.28 inches for August.
Mr. George Lynn former assistant conductor at Westminster Choir College will conduct a voice and choral program at the First Presbyterian church in Fort Davis next Tuesday September 4 at 8 p m It was announced this week.

A new miniature golf course will open on the old pool block on West College avenue in Alpine. Narvell Shannon and Joe Post, Sul Ross students, will operate the venture. The course will be lighted for night play and is expected to open around September 18.
