French Explorer La Salle and the Founding of Texas History
This account recalls Cavalier de La Salle, explorer for Louis XIV, who sailed the Mississippi to claim lands for France. He planted a flag at Matagorda Bay on January 1, 1685, and his dream of Louisiana led to Texas discovery. His death came at the hands of a mutinous follower, with Father Anastase marking his grave.

Dallam county was organized in September 1891 with Dalthart as the county seat and created August 21 1876 from Bexar county. A forty nine pound fish was caught in a lake at Ft Stockton the other day, the same fish that previously eluded many Alpine anglers at Stockton lake.

George B. Reeves Dies After Long Texas Service
George B. Reeves died September 5, 1882. Born July 3, 1826, he came to Texas in 1845 from Arkansas and settled in Grayson County. He held sheriff and tax assessor roles, served in the legislature at the start of the Civil War, organized and led Company Eleventh Texas Cavalry, was promoted to colonel in 1863, and was Speaker of the House when he died. Reeves County was named in his honor.

A. W. Terrell Exander dies on visit to Mineral Wells
A. W. Terrell Exander born November 3, 1827 in Patrick County Virginia. He settled in Austin in 1852 and served as District Judge, Confederate Army officer, farmer, and Texas senator before retiring to his Brazos County plantation. He helped draft the Jury Law and the Terrell Election Law and was buried in Austin.

Henderson Yoakum Texas historian and soldier dies in Houston
Henderson Yoakum born September 6 1810 in Claiborne Tennessee served in the Tennessee Senate then moved to Texas settling in Huntsville in 1848. He fought in the Mexican War campaign of General Taylor and after the war resumed law practice. He authored a noted history of Texas later living near Huntsville. He died suddenly in the Capitol on November 30 while in Houston for a Masonic address.

Galveston Storm Sparks New Commission Government
The 1900 Galveston hurricane killed about six thousand people and caused twenty million dollars in damage. In its wake a distinct municipal form, the Commission or Galveston Plan, emerged, and a sea wall five and a half miles long was built to shield the city from future disasters. Battle of Sabine Pass Defense in Civil War
On September 8 1863 Lieutenant Dick Dowling and 43 men held Sabine Pass against a five thousand strong assault led by General Franklin. Dowling captured 350 enemy soldiers and two vessels the Clifton and the Sachem with no local casualties.
