A Houston reader criticizes Judge Brown's convocation remarks at Sul Ross College in Alpine. The letter condemns alleged 1950s era bigotry and calls the audience, including GI Bill beneficiaries and foreign students, to reflect on democracy and national image.
Henderson residents Mr and Mrs George Davis and son Bill visited Mrs Daviss brother Asst Supt Henry Schmidt and family in the Park while Susan Davis prepared to return to Nevada. Alpine guests Paul Forchheimer and Bill Winter called on the Schmidt home. Tom Hitchcock and family moved from Alpine. Mrs Hitchcock will teach upper grades after earning a master's at Sul Ross. Mrs Joe McLean and two children moved in. Mr McLean remains in Alpine employed at Brewster County Motors. Koco Knobel presented a film on South Africa Parks at Government Springs Community House. Mrs Stanley Joseph hosted a bridge luncheon with Mesdames Herring Sublett Green Edwards Kay and Kathy Joseph. Park Ranger R R Miller and wife Pat, with children Steve and Jackie, visited from James Town Virginia. Miller formerly lived in Big Bend. James Walker 74 longtime Jeff Davis County sheriff died at home Saturday night August 20 after months of illness. Born July 17 1896 in Victoria he married Genevieve Murphy February 14 1910. Survived by wife daughter Salome Cope two grandchildren four sisters and other relatives. Funeral held in Victoria with Episcopal rites. Contributions sought to Cancer Fund Boquillas Persimmon Gap Ranger Stations.
