Local shoppers hear Bargain Day notices at Kleinman’s with new arrivals in clothing, boots, and groceries. Meriwether Burke visits Marfa. several residents return from trips to El Paso Presidio and Sanderson. Mrs. Jno Oates and daughter plan Chancellor visit. Death of Mrs. Meader ends Alpine arrival series.
Last Friday evening the Christian Endeavor group and a few invited friends enjoyed a moonlit mountain picnic west of town. After supper the crowd were treated to ice cream by Mr H W Ferguson. The trip was made in automobiles and the affair was much enjoyed by those present.
Mrs Cas Edwards entertained many friends last Saturday at her cottage for a progressive bridge party. Despite bad weather, invitees attended. Four tables were set with cut flowers for the game and a salad course served. Miss Lucile Rives won the top score prize. Mrs Ray Turner received the consolation prize.
Commissioner Terry plans start on the Alpine Marfa road next week after a survey of land west of town. The aim is to divert storm waters that have runoff into the west side, restoring the natural drainage established when the Orient railroad track was built.
Reports from across the state indicate last week’s rains were widespread though late. The rains should boost grass growth, with cattle expected to enter winter in good condition as a result of the moisture.

Rev. Jas T Tartt resigned as pastor of the Alpine First Baptist Church effective immediately after Sunday services. He arrived about three years ago, overseen growth from a small adobe meeting to a new $20,000 church home nearing completion. Tartt plans to study a year at a noted theological college before returning to ministry.
Alpine defeated Ft Stockton 5 to 0 on a sunny afternoon as Morris dominated on the mound for Alpine. Babe Gillette contributed two triples and a single, sparking the offense while Stockton, noted for sportsmanship, showed a calm, clean effort. The two teams scheduled a rematch today with a 25 cent admission.
Daisy Bakery announces a new retail location across the street from Alpine 4 Mercantile Co. The shop offers fresh bread, rolls, cakes, pies, and candy and invites customers to visit during business hours 8 to 5.
The Alpine wedding of Rev T Tartt and Mrs Kate Nevill surprised locals as the ceremony took place Monday at the bride’s home officiated by Rev Pierce of Marfa. The groom, formerly Alpine’s First Baptist pastor, plans to spend the winter in Boston with his wife and two children.
Bids from corporations and bankers to depository Alpine Independent School District funds for the 1916 17 year must state the interest rate on daily balances. Bids due by 10:00 am August 25 1916. Board preserves right to reject all bids. J D Jackson president FE Gillett secretary.
An advertisement from A B Sandifer invites customers to send clothes to his shop opposite Alpine Mercantile Co for sanitary steam pressing and requests phone orders.
