Jeff Lanson noticed the bone, which was brought to town by J. Roberts and drew many onlookers. The bone is well preserved, with evidence the full skeleton remains intact. The Smithsonian Institution plans to send a team to excavate the rest, valuing the one bone at about 200 dollars, and the specimen may soon be transported for assembly with other fossils. The mastodon lived two to three million years ago in the Pleistocene setting, similar in size to a large Indian elephant, with tusks up to nine feet and two teeth per jaw.
