Alpine Public Schools Set to Open September 1

Alpine public schools will open Monday September 1 with a week of Teachers Institute in Alpine. About thirty outside teachers from Marfa Fort Davis Marathon and Sanderson will need board and lodging, and local citizens are urged to provide accommodations.

Alpine Study Club Meets and Plans Prize at High School

The Alpine Study Club met led by President Mrs. F E Gillett and voted to award a ten dollar gold piece scholarship to the Alpine High School student with the highest average for the coming school year. Guests included Mesd Winde and Li Mec ombeds from Martin Yates, Jackson, and Misses Martin and ughn.

Recruiting party passes through Fort Bliss to El Paso

A recruiting party from Wagoner and Ambulance Co. No 10 stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso arrived in the city after a short stay. Sgt Hicks and Wagoner Scheeler remained for a day, then departed. Three applicants from the city were interviewed.

McAdoo backs metric system push via World Trade Club

War treasury secretary William G. McAdoo endorsed the World Trade Club of San Francisco in promoting worldwide adoption of metric weights and measures. He said the transition would protect commercial interests during the shift, boost education and prosperity, and urged progress without delay. Mrs. CA Brown and Alpine visited August 7, toured Southern California product exhibits in Los Angeles and planned further local visits in downtown.

Midland cowmen buy Alpine yearlings for ranch in Texas

Messrs J W Stokes and A P UI of Midland arrived in Alpine to buy a thousand head of steerlings for their Ran kin ranch. They report high stock prices, scarce gains, and warn rain is needed amid cattlemen shifting to steers as demand rises. Stokes claims Alpine area has the best bred cattle in Texas within 20 to 30 miles, Midland included.
