The NBC opens its 23rd Texas championship tourney at Kokernot Field Alpine with a doubleheader tomorrow night. Marfa Indians vs Alpine Internationals at 6 30 p m and Alpine Cowboys versus Lubbock All Stars at 9 30 p m headlining the event.
About 125 4-H boys and girls from 26 West Texas counties, plus leaders and agents, will gather at Sul Ross State College in Alpine next Monday for an Electric Demonstration Day. Hosted by West Texas Utilities Co and the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the program starts at 9 am with sessions by Price Hobgood and W. S. Allen on electrical farming, and demonstrations by G. C. Osborne and Car Piel on lighting.
Three hundred fifty persons registered for the Paisano Music Camp sponsored by the Church Music Dept of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The camp runs at Paisano Baptist Encampment grounds between Alpine and Marfa and ends with a 7 p.m. Friday music festival in Mitchell Tabernacle.
About 200 attendees are expected in Alpine August 7 to 9 for the West Texas Press Association meeting. The program includes sessions on advertising strategy, fiscal controls, tax accounting, and newspaper roles in community development, with El Paso consul Enrique Ballesteros as a keynote. Social events and a Big Bend National Park junket are planned, hosted by Jim Glasscock of The Alpine Avalanche.

George D Murphy was named band director of Sul Ross State College succeeding Joe Bellamah. He comes from New Mexico Western College Silver City and will arrive Aug 20 for the Sul Ross Band Clinic conducted by Bellamah before Bellamah leaves for Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. Murphy, unmarried, has taught at NM Western for seven years and holds degrees from St. Ambrose De Paul Northwestern. He studied under Jaroslav Cimera and taught at Hillman High School in Michigan.
New officers of the Brewster County Chapter of the American Red Cross will be elected at 7 30 p m Tuesday Aug 12 in the Chamber of Commerce building. Residents of Alpine Marathon and the Big Bend National Park are to attend. Reports on the year s activities will be presented in display form.
Mary Americus Ardoin Thomas 84 died at 2 25 am Wednesday in Brewster County Memorial Hospital. Born July 12 1884 in Gonzales County she lived in Alpine since 1957 with daughter Mary George after stints in Pecos Balmorhea and Murphysville. Funeral at 2 pm Thursday at First Baptist Church Alpine with Rev. Streetman. interment Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors include 2 sons 2 daughters 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Absentee balloting started this week in the Democratic second primary with the runoff set for Saturday August 23. In Precinct 2 County Commissioner Robert Valadez faces challenger H C Hernandez while Robert Hamilton of Midland and Edwin Jones of Houston run for the Supreme Court. Mr and Mrs Watson of Corpus Christi visited last week with their son Stacey Watson and his family.
Pete Bishop will become Alpine Chamber of Commerce manager on September 1, succeeding interim manager D. M. Bennett. Named by the C of C directors, Bishop has Navy service, worked with Baker Jewelers, and joined the Sul Ross State College staff. He is active in the Lions Club and church work and has scouted leadership experience.
Hearings opened Monday in the 83rd District Court at Fort Davis over two suits filed by Trans Pecos ranchers against cloud seeding by Southwest Weather Research and others. Ranchers seek injunctions claiming seeded clouds dissipate and deprive land of rain. weather firm rented by cotton farmers to curb hail damage.
Warner Construction Co of San Angelo submitted the lowest bid of 624 721 for the Sul Ross State College Science Building. President Bryan Wildenthal announced after bid opening there were 14 bids total with 50 000 between high and low. Board of Regents will review August 14 and if approved work will start immediately with a 360 working day completion.
At its regular meeting Monday night the City Commission will finalize which blocks are paved under the 1958 paving program. Streets must connect to existing paved streets and all property owners must sign up. City Secretary Lee Cowell has led the effort.
Big Bend National Park completed a $950,000 bridge program over Bone Spring Draw and Tornillo Creek with three concrete spans. The Cecil Ruby Co of Austin will begin a $625,000 road and tunnel project to Rio Grande Village within 10 days under the Mission 66 program.
Marshall Formby chairman of the State Highway Commission will be honored at a dinner at Cathedral Mountain Lodge at 7 p.m. Thursday Aug 14. Invited guests include Chamber of Commerce directors and city and county officials of Brewster Jeff Davis and Presidio Counties. Plates are $2.25. He will also address a joint Alpine Rotary and Lions Clubs meeting at Holland House at noon Thursday Aug 14. Primary purpose is to attend a meeting near Fort Davis.
