Drilling at the Dodson-Means Hovey Dome test 18 miles northeast of Alpine reached 2896 feet with casing set at 2318 feet. Major oil firms show strong interest. promoters pleased with formations to depth and especially the last 200 feet. The Jeff Davis county C M Joiner test was abandoned at 5005 feet five feet past contract, with minor oil gas and water shows at several depths. Joiner plans a new test about five miles west on the Jones-Catfeld ranch.

Ancient relics found in Grapevine Springs area of Big Bend
National Park service geologists report relics from an ancient lake in southern Brewster County including two elephant teeth and numerous fossils. Findings reveal dinosaur, shark, and giant turtle bones, plus over 100 oyster and clam specimens and many volcanic rocks. Some oysters reach thirty inches. A temporary museum will house the collection as the nucleus for a permanent park building.

Murray Family Leaves Alpine for New Home in Lamesa
Rev. and Mrs. David J. Murray and their children departed Wednesday to start life in Lamesa where he has accepted a pastorate at the Presbyterian church. He has served Alpine’s church for nine years and his coming departure is mourned by the congregation and many friends. Also noted is Miss Barbara Allen of Glencoe, whose wedding honored a fox terrier that saved her by waking her during a fire at her home.

Former Brewster Man Dies From Injuries
Marathon reports the death in a Denver hospital of David McGehee of San Antonio following an automobile accident two weeks earlier. A nephew of ranchman Guy S. Coombs, he worked with relatives in ranching, served as CCC camp lieutenant in the Chisos Mountains, then moved to a Denver camp where he was promoted to captain. His body was taken to San Antonio for burial.

Alpine is set to receive a new post office with a cooperative promotion from the Granada Theatre. Lions Vote for Band Scholarship at Granite Theatre Night
Granada Theatre Money Night event Tuesday week drew $78 in cash as the Lions voted to fund a nine month scholarship for a Sul Ross College Alpine school band boy chosen by band director Arnomas B.
