City Cuts Water Rates to Boost Connections
City commissioners announce a substantial rate cut intended to save water customers money and spur new connections to the municipal system. The new scheme starts with a $2 minimum for up to 3,000 gallons, 20¢ per thousand for the next 5,900, 12¢ per thousand for the next 22,000, and 12.5¢ per thousand thereafter, with alternative terms offering $2 minimum for the first 2,500 gallons and 50¢ per thousand for the next 2,500. An estimate shows 8,000 gallons costing $3 under the new plan, versus $3.25 previously. An average sprinkler using a 5-8 inch hose consumes about 200 gallons per hour, making the sprinkler run about 159 hours or 30,000 gallons for $6.30 under the old rate. City officials believe the rate is reasonable and expect more water patrons.
